Top Ten Tuesday: Serial Starts and Ends

So, here's the thing about book series: I love them. Really love them. In fact, I'm reading so many of them at the moment that I had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of them all. Here's the other thing: I tend to languish in the middle of multiple series without ever actually completing any of them. That's why TTT prompts like the one we have today—Top Ten Completed Series I Wish Had More Books—are kind of tough for me. I managed to come up with ten for my list, but the majority of them, no surprise, are middle grade and YA series that consist of only a few installments. It's a lot easier to finish a MG trilogy, for me at least, than it is to complete an adult series with 20+ books in it!

Do you want to chat about your favorite series with a bunch of other passionate book lovers? Of course you do! You can get in on the TTT fun by clicking over to That Artsy Reader Girl, then making your own list. It's a good ole time, I promise.

Top Ten Completed Series That I Wish Had More Books

(covers are for the first book in each series)

1. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling—I'm betting this series is the first one that came to a lot of people's minds for this topic. I adore the world of Harry Potter and would love to sink back into it via more novels, be they prequels, a spin-off series, whatever...just not screenplays!

2. The Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson—Up until yesterday, I thought this YA series featuring a teenaged true crime aficionado who uses her unique skills to solve cold cases, was complete at four books. Then, I noticed a new installment being promoted on NetGalley. Yay! I love this series, so I'm thrilled it's going to continue on. Even though it doesn't really fit this prompt, I'm keeping it on the list because I'm so happy it's not over.

3. The London Shades series by Maureen Johnson—Speaking of Johnson, I'm still irritated that she hasn't finished this YA series about a young woman who gained "the sight" when she almost choked to death in her school cafeteria and subsequently became part of a London "ghost squad" that investigates supernatural crimes. There were supposed to be four books in the series, but The Shadow Cabinet (#3) came out in 2015 and there's been no action since. All I can say is, this series better not be finished! I'm holding out hope that Johnson will pen that fourth book, even though I can barely remember who's who and what's what in the series. I'll happily re-read them all if Johnson can just do me a solid and bring the series to a satisfying close.

4. The Al Capone series by Gennifer Choldenko—This MG series is set in the 1930s and features a boy who lives on Alcatraz Island, where his father works as a security guard. I loved all four of the books in the series and would gladly read more adventures starring the lovable Moose Flanagan.

5. The Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer—I'm not sure how many installments were planned for this YA series about an orphaned girl who goes from living rough on the streets of London to becoming the most notorious pirate on the high seas, but her adventures ended with the death of her creator in 2014. The series is all kinds of entertaining. I'm sad that Jacky Faber's tale had to end and that Meyer will never write another book.

6. The Good Girl's Guide to Murder series by Holly Jackson—Although I didn't like the direction this story took in the last book, I still very much enjoyed the trilogy as a whole. I would read more books about Pip, especially if they were in the upbeat style of the first two installments.

7. The Gold Seer Trilogy by Rae Carson—I adored this YA historical/supernatural series about a young woman with the ability to sense the presence of gold. Her adventures kept me totally enthralled. I would love to read more of them.

8. The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness—It's been a long time since I read this YA trilogy (well, three full books and three novellas) of dystopian thrillers, so I honestly can't even remember what the books are about. I only know that I loved the trilogy when I read it and would gladly reengage with its characters and their world.

9. The Lewis Trilogy by Peter May—This adult mystery series set in the Outer Hebrides features Fin Macleod, one of my favorite May characters. More books featuring him would make me very, very happy.

10. The Big Stone Gap series by Adriana Trigiani—I loved all four of the books in this series and would gladly read more featuring the same setting and characters. The novels are full of warmth and charm. I'm definitely going to need to re-read them at some point.

There you go, ten series I wish would be extended. Have you read any of them? Which series do you wish had more books in them? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

  1. Ah, a fellow spreadsheet lover. :) I 100% depend on my spreadsheet to keep track of series that I'm reading, what books I've read, what books remain, etc. The London Shades series sounds interesting. Too bad there's no conclusion yet.

    1. I do love me a spreadsheet :) I'm not sure which blogger inspired me to track my series reading that way—it definitely could have been you if you've talked about yours on your blog. At any rate, it's a SUPER helpful way to keep me on track with all the series I'm reading.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!

    1. Right? I'm hopeful Rowling will write more books set in that world. We'll see.

I hope your move is going well!

  3. I have a spreadsheet to track my series, too. I feel like most of the series I've finished are older ones, because younger me did a better job of finishing them than current me does. ;-)

    1. I started using a spreadsheet because another blogger suggested it. It might have been you? It was definitely a great idea because it absolutely helps me feel more organized in my serial reading. Good luck to both of us on finishing more series :)

  5. I am going to need a spreadsheet soon. Great idea! Would you believe I've never read Harry Potter?! I saw one movie and I have the entire movie series recorded, which I'm planning to watch in the fall. I wish I became an avid reader sooner because now I have so much to catch up on! :)

    1. Never? Oh my! You need to for sure. The movies are great, but the books are better (of course). I'm jealous you get to experience them for the first time, although I'm glad the movies weren't out when I read the series. I definitely may have been tempted to watch the movies first and that would have influenced my experience with the books. I hope you love reading the series!

    1. Definitely! I love series because I like really sinking into a setting and getting to know characters over time. It's just hard to keep track of where I am with each one. I tend to get stuck in the middle of lengthy ones. The spreadsheet really helps. I also like fantasticfiction.com for knowing the order of books in a series. It's super helpful.

      Thanks for stopping in, Rae!

  8. I loved Truly Devious but I really need to pick up the other books

    1. I read TRULY DEVIOUS when it came out, then didn't read the sequels for so long that I had to re-read TRULY DEVIOUS before moving on. Forgetting what's happening in a series between books is actually the #1 reason I don't finish a lot of series. I don't like to re-read, but I also don't like starting the next installment in a series without remembering what happened in the last one! #booknerdproblems

      Thanks for stopping by, Louise!

  10. I have read very little series, I usually read trilogies (does that count as a series?). I can only think of one or two series that I have read that had more than 3 books in them...and one series I never finished, the other I got tired of the author.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My list is full of trilogies because those are the series I'm most likely to finish! Their length makes them a lot easier to complete then series that go on and on and on.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!

  11. Nice list! I've had A Good Girls Guide to Murder on my TBR for a while, and I keep seeing Truly Devious around, so I'm taking that as a sign from the universe.

    1. The universe is definitely trying to tell you something! I enjoyed both these series, although I think I liked the Truly Devious series more. It's clever and fun and twisty. I hope you enjoy both these series if you read them.

  12. I'm with you on wishing there was a fourth Shades of London book! I was devastated that it seems to have been canceled. Sob! I would definitely need to re-read them if a fourth book ever sees the light!

  13. I would love more Harry Potter myself! But I'm like you, I struggle to keep up with most of the series I'm reading. And I keep starting new series, which is a real bookish problem. ;D

    Replies
    1. I know! I keep telling myself not to start a series until it's complete, but I never listen to myself. LOL. Thus, I'm in the middle of dozens of series right now. Argh. I never learn, but at least I'm in good company :)

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!

    1. I think all HP fans would be thrilled if more books came out. I'd love prequels or books featuring the children of the original cast. Hopefully, Rowling will hear our pleas!

Here's my Top Ten Tuesday list!

    1. I read tons of series, but it's the YA and MG ones that I tend to actually finish! It helps that they're usually shorter and read faster.

  19. I don't read many series so found this week tough.

I do love Harry Potter though and think that there should be some after school books. The screenplay The Cursed Child could have easily become an excellent novel! We have started reading the series to my son. He has just turned 4 so doesn't quite appreciate it yet, but might as well start him off young!

I've seen A Good Girls Guide to Murder and am curious about that series.

    Have a great week!

    1. Yeah, I don't get why Rowling published screenplays instead of novels. So weird. I'm really hoping she writes more novels set in the HP world, whether they're about grown-up Harry, Ron, and Hermione, their kids, whatever.

I love that you're reading HP to your 4yo! Ha ha. Maybe Rowling should write HP chapter books adapted to a younger audience.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Emily!

  20. Great list! I haven't read of these any except Harry Potter -- and yes, I'd like to see more too! I'm less interested in the timeline of the Cursed Child, would rather just have the original series continue onward after Hogwarts into early adulthood.

  21. I've enjoyed Harry Potter, of course, many times. Yes, I agree with what you said there. I really liked the Truly Devious series and am happy to hear that another is expected. The London Shades series - read it, wish for another. And then there is the Lewis Trilogy - one of my favorites and I'd love, love, love more of Finn McCleod and company. :-)

  22. Not only have I not read any of your series except for the first book in Harry Potter, I haven't even heard of any of the authors let alone the books. Isn't it amazing how many different books there are?

Thanks for visiting my TTT this week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Chaos Walking series has always appealed to me.

I tend to finish MG and YA series over any others.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've only read the Harry Potter books and the first one in the Al Capone series though that one is so fun!

    ReplyDelete
  25. If I'd had a chance to participate in this one, Harry Potter would've definitely made my list. :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. Harry Potter is one of the only things that's made me wish I were immortal, or at least could increase my lifespan by a few centuries. I can't even imagine how many creative retellings, side stories, sequels, etc. might happen once it's out of copyright. It's gonna be positively Austen-esque. I know there is already a huge amount of fanfic, but there's so much there as to be genuinely overwhelming. I like the idea of properly edited, novel-length stories (although I'm sure those already exist in fandom, I've not come across any).

But at the same time, I have also pretty much loved, like you, every bit of material Rowling has put out aside from Cursed Child, so in spite of that last bit, so I too dream of mroe properly-published books from the OG source.

    2. I'm so happy for you with #2! That's the absolute best feeling, going "I wish..." and then finding out your wish is already being granted. Hopefully one day it happens for her actually-unfinished series, too.

    3. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of Bloody Jack, but that does sound fun for when you're in a piratical mood; a shame about the author's death. The Goodreads summary makes it sound like it is brought to a proper end even if it wasn't exactly planned...have you read them all? Is my assumption/hope correct?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is widely considered to be worth reading. The series has captivated readers of all ages with its imaginative world-building, memorable characters, and compelling storytelling. It's a classic coming-of-age tale that explores themes of friendship, love, sacrifice, and the battle between good and evil. Whether you're a fan of fantasy, adventure, or just great storytelling, the Harry Potter series is definitely worth your time.
