Looking for a Light, Diverting Romance? Look No Further.
7:30 PM
(Image from Becca Wilhite's blog)
After writing eleven book reviews today, I'm too tired to come up with another plot summary, so here's the official one for Wedding Belles by Melanie Jacobson, Jenny Proctor, Becca Wilhite, and Brittany Larsen:
Janie is a classical cellist booked to play a posh Charleston wedding. She’s excited to have the lucrative gig until the groom’s brother, Emmett, shows up and asks her to help him play a song he wrote for the happy couple. The only trouble? Emmett is her unrequited high school crush.
Lily has been Dahlia's best friend, partner-in-crime, and now her maid of honor . . . until suddenly there's no wedding, and she's left to clean up Dahlia's biggest mess of all. She's been friends with Deacon, the jilted groom, for just as long, and it's up to her to rescue him after Hurricane Dahlia blows through.
Sutton is a photographer running from her past. Only the pleas from her best friend to photograph her wedding could bring Sutton back to Charleston. Her plan is to get in and get out before her ex knows she and their daughter are in town. At least it’s the plan until she meets Max, who turns out to be the safe place she didn’t know she was looking for.
I don't usually dig short stories, but I'm becoming a fan of romance novels centering around one main event that are told in parts. Wedding Belles is no exception. It offers a series of funny, upbeat stories written by some of my favorite Latter-Day Saint romance novelists. Although the book has nothing to do with the Church, it is mostly clean (there are a few mild swear words) and completely sweet. Naturally, I liked some of the stories more than others (the first and final are my favorites), but all of them are fun, warm, and engaging. If you're looking for a light, diverting read, definitely pick up this swoony romance.

for brief, mild language (no F-bombs)

Love at First Note Strikes Just the Right Chord
7:42 AM
(Image from Deseret Book)
Violinist Emma Hill knows that moving back to Asheville, North Carolina, will mean taking a step backward in her flourishing music career. Since the South is not exactly overrun with eligible Mormon bachelors, the 25-year-old's dating life will likely take a hit as well. Family's worth it, though, and Emma's is struggling. The effects of her mother's MS are taking a toll on her parents, while her younger sister—also a talented violinist—is threatening to quit music altogether. Emma wants to be there to help, even if her folks insist they're fine.
To Emma's surprise, Asheville is not as RM deficient as she thought it would be. In fact, a very good-looking specimen has just moved into the apartment next door. Not only is Elliott Hart hot, but he's also humble and kind. And a musician to boot. With a large YouTube following, the 26-year-old pianist is a minor celebrity—minus the inflated ego. In fact, he could not be more perfect. With all she and Elliott have in common, Emma expects their hearts to fall into perfect harmony. Except, they don't.
Why is Elliott rebuffing Emma's every (admittedly clumsy) move? How can she convince him she's serious Eternal Companion material and not just another star struck fan? Will the two ever make beautiful music together? Or has Emma struck too many wrong notes with the man she's coming to love most desperately?
I don't read a lot of them, but I do love me a fun, swoony rom com. It has to be done right, though, and Love at First Note by Jenny Proctor definitely struck a chord. Yes, it skims on plot. Still, the novel is light, sweet, and humorous, just as it should be. As a bonus, the characters have depth to them; the story is engaging; and the tone is upbeat. It's a cute, clean romance. Easy to read, easy to love. Which I did. This is the first book I've read by Proctor, but Love at First Note convinced me that it won't be the last.

LDS Rom-Com Fun, But A Little Too Breezy (With a Giveaway!)
4:48 PM
As a tall, athletic, bi-racial woman, Lane Bishop is used to standing out. Which is just fine by her. She'd rather play center field than sit on the sidelines anyway. When she's invited to a pick-up soccer game to cheer on the Hamilton men—five gorgeous "untouchable" brothers—she quickly decides cheerleading is for the birds. Not only does she insert some much needed girl power into the game, but she makes the winning goal, and scores a date with Jamie, the most eligible Hamilton. Lane swore off the LDS singles scene when she moved back to North Carolina, but what can she say? She's never been able to resist a challenge. And the commitment-phobic Jamie is a tantalizing challenge indeed.
Not long after winning her "prize," Lane begins to wonder if charming, spontaneous Jamie is the right man for her after all. If only his older brother Simon weren't so grounded, so thoughtful, so observant ... so different than doesn't-think-twice Jamie. Is it possible Lane's fallen for the wrong Hamilton? As the situation grows more and more complicated, she knows she needs to tame her fickle heart. And fast.
If the plot summary for Wrong For You, a new LDS rom-com by Jenny Proctor, seems a little thin ... well, it is. Besides the love triangle at the center of the novel, there's not a whole lot going on with this story. It's meant to be a light-hearted romance, sure, but that doesn't mean the novel can't have some depth. Wrong For You is fun and upbeat, with a strong female lead and yet, it just gets a little too silly for me. I'm not a big fan of love triangles as the only source of conflict in a book in the first place. I also didn't care much for Lane, who seemed like a big, fat hypocrite to me. So, while Wrong For You is a light, fun While You Were Sleeping-ish novel, I didn't love it. It made for easy, breezy reading during a week where my overtaxed brain couldn't have handled much more, but still ... Proctor's got a great storytelling voice; I'd just love a little more depth from her books.
