Happy 20th Birthday, BBB! Let's Ban Some Books (Book Buying, That Is).
Cue the confetti cannons and fireworks! Bloggin' 'bout Books is TWENTY years old today. I can't believe I've been a part of the book blogging world for two whole decades. Astounding. In that time, I've read and reviewed hundreds of books, "met" lots of lovely blogger friends (some of whom I've been privileged to meet in person as well), made countless comments on other book blogs, participated in tons of blog tours, Book Blogger Hops, Top Ten Tuesdays, etc., and never taken a long blogging break. Participating in the book blogging world over these years has been a joy. Thank you for chilling here with me in my humble little corner of the Web.
Stephen over at Reading Freely asked if I had any big plans to celebrate this milestone. I've been contemplating that, actually. I haven't been organized enough to come up with an amazing giveaway (Sorry!) and I've never been comfortable being on camera so I can't do a birthday candle blowout video like the cool Bookstagrammers do, but I have been thinking about my goals going forward. One result of being a long-time reader and book blogger is that I own mountains of books—some that have been sent to me by authors and publishers, some that I have purchased, some that just magically appear in the night while I'm sleeping. My bookshelves are literally bowing under the weight of my physical book collection. And we're not even going to talk about the 1000+ titles on my Kindle! While it's always good to have reading options, I feel like my hoarding book collecting is getting a little out of control. So, for my 20th blogiversary, I'm going to embark on a year-long book-buying ban so that I can concentrate on reading the books I already have and clearing off my poor overcrowded shelves, both physical and virtual. I'm a big library user; that won't change. I'll still read books I don't own, I just won't buy anymore. For a year. Think I can do it? I do, especially since I've been on a last meal-type book buying spree lately. Ha ha.
To show you what I'm dealing with, here are some unfiltered shelfies. (Instagram worthy, they are not!) I have two large bookshelves in my living room, which means that the first thing people usually say when they walk into my house is, "Whoa! That's a lot of books." And it is. My main bookshelf, which is about 9 feet tall and 12 feet long, houses both review books and those I've purchased. Next to it, my desk (which is probably 8 feet tall and 8 1/2 ish feet wide) holds review books as well as a few library books. The red cart on the left contains the rest of my library books as well as read titles waiting to be reviewed and books that will go into my Little Free Library when there is space. Under my desk, I have more donations for my LFL.
There are other bookshelves in my home, but they house my husband's books. He may have just as many as I do! The struggle is real...

Comments make me feel special, so go crazy! Just keep it clean and civil. Feel free to speak your mind (I always do), but be aware that I will delete any offensive comments.
P.S.: Don't panic if your comment doesn't show up right away. I have to approve each one before it posts to prevent spam. It's annoying, but it works!

Congrats on 20 years!!! That is crazy! My first thought that a book ban to celebrate is backwards and that you should buy more books to celebrate haha, but after seeing the pictures I understand! I do love your bookshelf and your desk though! They are gorgeous <3
ReplyDeleteHappy 20 years!! Good luck with your challenge. In honor of your blog-versary, Ben and I are going to a new bookstore that just opened! 😉
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Happy Blogoversary! I've got a little over 2 years left until my 20th! Pretty sure I'll still be doing this then, not sure what the blogosphere will look like though! lol. A year long book buying ban. Wow. That sounds impressive! My problem is I still like supporting authors by buying their books asap and then there are all those exclusive first print editions that I will have total KOMO if I don't buy it when it's available! Lol. I feel like you will do well with your goal, so I wish you all the best! Hope you have many more happy blogging years to come as well! <3
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 20 years! I have turned a room into our house into a library so I just keep adding bookshelves but I have recently run out of wall space. I might have to do some book buying bans myself - at least for a bit!
ReplyDeleteI also congratulate you on 20 years of blogging, Susan! I have loved your blog since I first discovered it. Not completely sure when that was, but a long way back. Good luck with your challenge for yourself this next year. I haven't named that as a challenge for me, but I am on sort of the same kind of journey. I know I don't have as many physical books as you do, but I have a bunch more than you on my Kindle. I'm trying not so buy books, even for the Kindle (much) and will try to have patience to wait for books that I 'must' have to come when I put them on hold at my local library. Mostly, it has become clear to me that I have way more books in whatever form than I am likely to read in the rest of my lifetime. Some of the newer books have themes that I find a bit challenging and so I'm trying to read the books I already own. We'll see how it goes. I will say that I have made exceptions for attending book events at home or when travelling and getting signed copies of books. Have fun sorting through and your library will be blessed by what you donate to them.
ReplyDeleteHuge milestone and when so many bloggers have faded away, you're still here. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 20 years! How incredibly cool!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 20 years, that is just fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI tend to pass my books along, whether it is to friends, random people in airports, or a local book sale. I do keep some, but only the really special ones. I do have about 50 that are my TBR shelves. I am impressed that you will not buy books for a year. I don't think I could do it!
I only read my own books because our library here doesn't really cater for me. But that means I have to buy my boook club books and that leads to finding more others. LOL
ReplyDeleteBut well done!!!
20 years is amazing! Congratulations! Beautiful bookshelves! Reading just what you already have for one year is a good goal.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations.that is a huge milestone.
ReplyDeleteHappy blogiversary! It's always great to see someone else around who's been blogging for a long time. Your 2027 goal sounds great! I hope it helps you prune your shelves. (Need to make room for more books!)
ReplyDeleteHappy 20th Blog Birthday! Twenty years is pretty impressive. And good luck on your yearlong book buying ban. That's a hard thing to do, but I believe in you. I'm so glad we're blogging friends. And I love your blog. Here's to 20 more years. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprise you have gained so many books. I would have had the same overflowing book problem if I haven't turned to reading only ebooks though I only borrow from my public library.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the book buying ban. Happy 20 years of blogging.
Have a lovely day.
