Top Ten Tuesday: Moving Woes and Seasonal Slows

It's been a few weeks since I've posted anything here at BBB and you can probably guess why. We made the big move to our new/old house. The remodel is nowhere near finished, but we moved all our stuff in anyway. It was a grueling weekend of moving in record-breaking heat (and that's saying something in Arizona!) that left us all exhausted. We never would have survived it without our ward (church congregation) and other friends helping us.  After a week in an AirBnB, everyone except me voted to officially move into the house despite the fact that it had no functioning sinks, no kitchen countertops, no appliances, a big hole in the master bathroom (the delivery of a custom window has been delayed), etc., etc. I'm a gal who likes her creature comforts, so it's been an experience to say the least. The sink and appliance situation is supposed to be rectified today. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, the remodeling goes on. The entire house pretty much looks like this right now:

We still don't have railings for the stairs and loft. The washer and dryer are in boxes in the garage, so the laundry situation is getting a little out of control...

Boxes, boxes, and more boxes everywhere you look!

At least my husband has a sense of humor. He built this couch out of some of our food storage. The Mormons in the audience are laughing right now—if you know, you know. Ha ha. The t.v. that is supposed to go on the wall wasn't delivered when it was supposed to be and we still haven't bought a new couch to replace the one we sold prior to the move. More items for the ole to-do list...

Annnyyywaaayyy, the good news is progress is being made on the house. It's just slow. Also, I'm really learning to appreciate things I've always taken for granted, like sinks and master bedroom showers. And, I'm back for Top Ten Tuesday. Yay! I've missed participating and interacting with you all. If you haven't gotten on the TTT train yet, you really should. Just hop on over to That Artsy Reader Girl for all the details.

Today's guilt trip prompt is Top Ten Books From My Past Seasonal TBR Posts I STILL Haven't Read (submitted by Dedra at A Book Wanderer).  I'd venture to guess I'm not the only one who loves creating these lists, yet fails to actually complete them. I looked back at my seasonal lists for 2021 to see how many of my picks I read. Here's how it panned out:

Check marks denote books read. Titles link to reviews I posted here on the blog or on Goodreads.

Poison Lillies by Katie Tallo
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
In the Market for Murder by T.E. Kinsey
Futureface by Alex Wagner
The Last Daughter of York by Nicola Cornick
Stiff by Mary Roach

Out of 60 intended reads, I only managed to tackle 21 (really only 20 since one book was on two lists). Ouch! Will these dismal stats keep me from making more overly ambitious seasonal TBR lists in the future? Of course not. They're way too much fun to resist.

How have you been doing with your seasonal TBR lists? Have you read any of the books I've listed here? Are there any reads on these lists that I absolutely cannot miss? I'd love to know your opinion. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

  1. Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday! I was wondering how you were doing but wasn’t sure if it was okay to check in. :)

I’m glad you’re making progress in turning your new house into a home. Moving is stressful!

And, yeah, it’s much easier to make a seasonal TBR than it is to actually read the whole thing. Hehe.

    1. You're so thoughtful! You can always check up on me. Makes me feel loved and missed :)

Moving really is stressful. You forget how stressful if you don't move often. I'm glad it gave me the opportunity to purge my stuff, though. That felt really good, even though it included a few thousand books :(

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!

    1. Good luck with it! Moving out is such a big, stressful project. I'm glad that part is over, but there's still moving IN to deal with. Yikes. I hope your move goes very smoothly.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marg!

  3. Oh goodness, what a time you've been having. I definitely would have voted with you. No sinks or appliances means I'm not ready to move in. But hey, you have a lovely couch of boxes so there's that. :) At least you've read *something* from each TBR. That has to count for something, right?

    1. Right? Sinks are a deal breaker for me. Thankfully, 4 of our 6 sinks are now operational. I may have shed a tear when the kitchen sink went in! I have never properly appreciated my kitchen sink before. LOL.

The box couch is pretty sweet, isn't it? Comfy and stylish, too. I know you're jealous :)

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!

  4. Welcome back! I missed you! I love the way you did this...I just did pictures of the ones I hadn't read yet...I always feel like if I post I have to have a picture, LOL. Good luck with the remodel and all the unpacking!!!

    1. Awww, thanks so much! I'm glad I was missed in the book blogosphere :)

I like to have pictures, too, but I figured my moving mess ones were enough. I will need lots of luck to get through all the boxes, although I am making decent progress in spite of everything.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy.

  5. Brilliant idea to just copy your old lists and tick off those that you read. It just made me smile.

I'm glad you made it into your new house. Your pictures take me back about three years when our house looked like this. There is an end to the tunnel, even if you can't see the light, yet, believe me. And it will all be worth it.

    Send me your new address?

    1. I actually started reading MALIBU RISING a few months ago, but I didn't get very far before the book came due at the library. One of these days I'll check it out again. I hope we both enjoy it when we read it.

  8. Seasonal TBRs can be a lot of fun! For me, they mostly serve as a reminder for the books I want to prioritize... though that doesn't mean that I always actually do. ;-)

    1. Same. My reading is never set in stone. I keep lists of books so I remember what I MIGHT want to read at some point. If I get to them, great. If I don't, oh well. No big deal.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!

  9. I don't know how you do it but I don't make seasonal TBR lists. I find it hard to follow them. Jane Eyre is the only book on your list I had read. I've given up on the A noodle shop mystery after book7 but I may try to read book 8.

Thanks for your visit to my blog. Have a lovely day.

    1. Like I told Nicole above, I really only make TBR lists for fun and because I have a terrible memory! It's a way to keep track of books that look interesting to me so I can check them out if/when I want to. If I made myself follow my TBR list faithfully, it would be too stressful and reading shouldn't be stressful, in my opinion.

I love JANE EYRE! I also really enjoy the Noodle Shop Mystery series.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lissa!

  10. The food storage couch totally made me laugh! And I would have voted with you to not move in until there were sinks and working appliances. Hope you get those today!

    Replies
    1. Right? It reminds me of an old LDS movie where all of the family's furniture is made out of food storage. I can't remember the name of it, though.

The last two of our six sinks are being hooked up today, so yay! I honestly never realized how important they are in my daily life. Ha ha.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!

  11. I was wondering how things were going for you with your move, renovation, etc. I completely understand all the things you mentioned. We have not (still) started the renovations. At this point, it's the cabinetmaking that is behind. However, it is all good. I truly know that when all the things get lined up, we'll get these new bathrooms, kitchen, fireplace, floors, etc. And it will be so wonderful. Yes, we will have to live through the renovations, but I suspect we will survive. One day....and take care, Susan. It will all be done in 'His' time, right? Big hugs!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A delay with our cabinets is actually responsible for a lot of the pushed-back timing of our renovations. It wasn't so much the construction/delivery as the salesman's total lack of organization! Most of the cabinets were hung a month ago, some are still in the garage, and some haven't arrived yet. Ugh.

This whole process is definitely teaching me gratitude and patience, two virtues I always need more of :) And, yes, I absolutely believe in God's timing. I truly have seen His hand guiding us through this experience. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!

  12. I hope you enjoy all the ones you haven't read whenever you get to them. I feel you on the moving woes, we just moved house a couple of weeks ago as well and are still very much in the sorting everything out phase, though thankfully not without basic utilities! I hope everything gets sorted out for you soon.

    1. I feel for you! Moving is SUCH a pain. Unpacking and figuring out where everything is going to go is actually my favorite part of the process, although it always seems to take FOREVER. In our case, we still don't have some of our cabinets and we have to wait for drywall and another round of painting to be done before we can hang anything on the walls, so...it's going to be awhile before everything really comes together. Wish me lots of patience...

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jo!

  15. Oh wow! That would definitely be stressful moving in with no water and such! I would've voted to wait until that was done too!

Whoa! You kept better track of your lists! I honestly just went with the last two seasons as I easily filled 10 that way. I think I would be too ashamed to go further back! Lol. Hope you're able to read more of these TBR books soon!

    1. Ha ha. It was interesting to see what I had and hadn't read from my seasonal TBR lists. Some books sound SOOO good when I put them on a list and then I just never get around to actually reading them. 1. There is something to be said for being in your own home, even if it's not quite the way you want it to be. The funny thing is this house already feels like home because we lived here for four years back when we first bought it, but it also feels like a new place because of all the remodeling. Interesting.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Wendy!

  17. Oh my goodness, Susan. I would be staying in the B&B. You are a good sport. I only looked back at two lists last week and came up with 10/20 so I felt pretty good, but if I went back further, it would be more like your results. I agree, I will continue to make TBR lists, even though I have not completed one yet.

    1. Right? I still think we should have AirBnB-ed it for this week, but it hasn't been all bad. It's been fun to see the progress that has happened and I'm super grateful that we now have functional sinks and appliances. It makes such a difference! There's so much about my spoiled existence that I take for granted. This process has definitely helped me be more grateful for the llittle things in life :)

    1. It honestly hasn't been THAT bad, although staying in the AirBnB would have been a lot more comfortable. Still, we've been able to get some things unpacked and settled. Every little bit helps!

  21. Lol at the couch. And I love those wood floors. I like the different tones. Hopefully the new place gets comfy soon.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks! The floors are actually waterproof vinyl, if you can believe it. Our contractor convinced us to go with vinyl over real wood because we wanted something that could go in every room of the house. It looks better than I thought it would, so I'm really pleased. Everyone who's come to see the house comments on the floors, so they're definitely making a statement!

Thanks for popping in, Zezee With Books!

  22. Moving and remodeling, even if they go perfect, are certainly good reasons for not having time to read! What a huge project! You have some great books on your lists -- the one that jumps out at me is In a Book Club Far Away. I ended up listening to the audiobook, and loved it!

    Replies
    1. Right? It's taking me forever to get through my current read because I've been spending so much time unpacking and organizing. Someday, I'll have time again to just spend the whole day reading!

Oooh, I'm always looking for good audiobooks. I'll have to see if my library has IN A BOOK CLUB FAR AWAY on audio. Thanks for the suggestion.

      Thanks for stopping by, Lisa!

  23. I saw the couch boxes and had to laugh. I don't envy you at all and I'm crossing all my fingers and toes that this goes as smoothly as possible. Between the heat and the move I'm shocked you're getting any reading at all. My reading drops in the summer and I'm not trying to move and renovate at the same time!

    1. It has been a ridiculously hot summer, although this week has actually been cooler thanks to monsoon storms. I don't love the humidity, but I do love the overcast skies. It's something different than the norm! We should have waited to move until this week. When we moved, it was 115 degrees outside. Even though we started at 6 in the morning, it was awful!
