Top Ten Tuesday: My Soon-to-Be No-Longer-New-to-Me Author List

As much as I love re-exploring my favorite authors every time they come out with a new book, I also really enjoy discovering new writers. I don't know what percent of my reading every year comes from new-to-me authors, but it's high—maybe 70% or more? Even still, there are a bunch of authors I have been meaning to try and just haven't gotten around to yet, so today's TTT prompt is perfect: Top Ten Authors I Haven't Read, But Want To. The idea came from the lovely Deanna over at A Novel Glimpse. If you're a big romance reader, you're definitely going to want to visit her blog.

Don't forget to give Jana, our TTT hostest with the mostest, some love as well. While you're at That Artsy Reader Girl, why don't you join in the TTT fun? It's a good time, I promise!

Top Ten Authors I Haven't Read Yet, But Want To

For this list, I'm going to focus on authors who've written more than one book. I included covers for the book of theirs I'm most excited to read.

Historical Fiction

1. Kate Quinn—Quinn has written a number of historical novels, the most recent of which focus on World War II. Her books have gotten lots of buzz and praise, so I'm interested to see what I think. I picked up The Diamond Eye at my local indie last week. Hopefully, I'll get to it soon.

2. Beatriz Williams—Williams writes historicals on her own and as part of a collaborative author trio. I've read a couple of the latter, but none of the former.

Mystery/Thriller

3. Sulari Gentill—Gentill is an Australian author who pens contemporary and historical mysteries. I'm especially interested in her Rowland Sinclair series as well as The Woman in the Library, which comes out on June 7.

4. Elizabeth Haynes—This English author writes crime fiction and mysteries. Her books sound right up my alley!

5. Alice Feeney—I love me a tense, atmospheric thriller. Feeney's novels sound like just the ticket.

General

6. T.I. Lowe—I have no roots in the Southern United States, but I still love to read stories set there. Something about the sumptuous settings, slow drawls, and easy vibes really appeals to me. I'm always looking for new Southern authors to love and Lowe is one I've got my eye on.

7. Donna Everhart—Ditto for Everhart, whose Southern novels are supposed to be full of "authenticity and grit." I'm down.

8. T.J. Klune—I'm pretty sure everyone has read Klune's magical children's books by now but me. I'm going to remedy that soon, I hope!

9. Graham Norton—Thanks to clips that show up on my Facebook feed apropos of nothing, I know that Norton is an Irish actor who hosts a U.K. television show where he interviews celebrity guests. Until Cath mentioned it, I had no idea he also wrote books. He's penned memoirs, mysteries and family sagas. I'm not interested in his non-fiction, but his novels sound appealing.

Non-Fiction

10. Mary Roach—I've been meaning to read Roach's informative books for years. As we speak, Stiff is sitting on my bookshelf casting meaningful glances my way...

There you have it, ten authors I haven't read yet that I really want to try out. Have you read any of them? What do you think of their work? Who are the new-to-you writers you plan to take a look at soon(ish)? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

  1. I've read Alice Feeney, but that's the only author on your list that I have. Fun TTT list, Susan! :)

    1. I've been meaning to read Feeney for some time now, but somehow I just haven't gotten to her yet. *Sigh* So many books, so little time...

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!

  2. I have only read Williams as a collab with White and Willig, but I loved those books. I also loved Klune's book. I hope you love all of these.

    1. Same. I like the W's as writing partners, but Karen White is the only one I've read on her own. I'm interested to see what I think of her solo books.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!

  3. Great list, Susan! Kate Quinn and TJ Klune are authors I'm curious about as well. I just forgot about them when I was doing my list, lol. Oh well. They can go on part 2, 3, 4, or 5. I hope you like Alice Feeney. I loved ROCK PAPER SCISSORS and look forward to more books written by her.

    1. I actually own several of her books, but I STILL haven't read her. I'll hopefully get to her this year and, yes, I hope we both enjoy her books. They sound excellent.

  5. Norton has now had one of his books dramatised for TV, Holding I think it's called. I can't tell you what it's like, we have several episodes recorded but haven't watched it yet. The Keeper is good but not cheerful. LOL

Oh... I think I might have to look 'Stiff' up as I sense a nice bit of weirdness.

    1. Thanks for the warning on THE KEEPER. I'll make sure I read it when I'm in a good mood. LOL.

STIFF sounds super weird, but also totally fascinating. I can't wait!

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!

  6. TI Lowe's book has been on my list for over a year...I even requested my library to get it (they did!) and I still haven't read it...sigh. The struggle is real.

  8. Some great authors on this list Susan. Donna Everhart is a great author, but her books deal with difficult times in US history. I really enjoy Kate Quinn and Alice Feeny as well. T.J. Klune and T.I. Lowe are relatively new to me, but I read both of those books and enjoyed them. You have some great reading ahead, Susan.

    1. Thanks for the note on Everhart. I think that's exactly why I've been putting off reading her. Her books sounds excellent, but also intense. I'm glad you think highly of these other authors as well. That makes me even more excited to read them!

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carla!

  9. Wow, Under the Magnolias looks really good -- I'm so excited about books that have a similar premise to Shameless, which I always wanted to watch but never did because euch @ the rating/content warnings. Although I weirdly have kind of a block about Southern settings; I feel like there's an entire understanding of its culture that no book can ever really unlock for me without having epxierencied it, and the weird feeling about it makes me tend to shy away.

But for this, I'll give it a go! I'll try to approach it with your perspective in mind; that's a great description of what's appealing about the locale.

Also I've seen Graham Norton's show a few times (mostly or possibly exclusively when David Tennant is on), but I didn't know he wrote books either!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't watch much t.v., so I've never heard of Shameless. If it's got mature content, I wouldn't watch it anyway. BUT, I do love Southern settings. I get what you're saying, though - having never lived in the South or even spent much time visiting, I don't really know what Southern living is like. One of the reasons I love to read, though, is so that I can experience things I don't otherwise get to. I guess I just trust that authors try really hard to get it right!

On Graham Norton...I had never heard of him until suddenly clips of his show started popping up on my Facebook channel. It was weird. Like I said, I'm not a t.v. watcher nor a celebrity follower, so I have NO idea why I was targeted. LOL.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, RS!

  10. I finally read Kate Quinn last year! I read The Alice Network and it broke my heart but it was wonderful. Beatriz Williams is one I've read a few books by but somehow haven't and really need to get back to her. This is such a great list!

  13. I've read one Kate Quinn book before and really enjoyed her writing. T.J. Klune is usually a hit or miss for me, but I know people love the cozy vibes of his most recent work :D

    1. So, I actually didn't realize Klune had other books besides his two newest. Interesting. His others don't look like my kind of thing. I doubt I'll try those. Good to know.

  18. I don't know that I would call TJ Klune's work children's books, but I have enjoyed what I've read by him so far! Also, I've been meaning to pick up a book by Mary Roach, too. I'm not sure which one to start with though.

    1. Silly me, I just assumed THE HOUSE ON THE CERULEAN SEA was Klune's debut because I had never heard of him before. I had no idea he'd actually written a bunch of books. None of his other ones really sound like my kind of thing, but you never know.

As for Roach, I'm starting with STIFF because that's the one that's best known. I hope we both enjoy her stuff!
