Top Ten Tuesday: They Just Keep Sneaking In...

If everything goes according to plan, my family and I will soon be downsizing, moving from a 5,000 square foot house into one that is half that size. This will require sorting through the thousands of books I own and getting rid of about 75% (that's the goal, anyway). Considering this should be happening in a matter of months, I really should not be acquiring more books, but between a bookstore shopping spree for my December birthday, Christmas gifts, and the gift cards I got for my birthday and Christmas, let's just say that a *few* new books have snuck their way into my home! This week's TTT topic is perfect for showcasing these gems: Top Ten Most Recent Additions to My Book Collection

I'd love to see your list, so please consider joining in the TTT fun. Hop on over to That Artsy Reader Girl for all the details.

Top Ten Most Recent Additions to My Book Collection

Just before Christmas, I traded in some books, then used my store credit, plus my birthday discount to buy these titles from Changing Hands, my local indie:

1.  The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan—I've checked this one out from the library several times, but have never managed to read it before it's come due, so I finally just bought it. The WWII novel is about four very different British women who enter a cooking contest to win the prize of becoming the competition's first-ever female host.

2.  Redshirts by John Scalzi—My 17-year-old son who doesn't like to read (the horror!) has had a hankering for a good sci-fi novel. Since that's not my genre, I asked for recommendations on my personal Facebook page. This novel was suggested more than once. It's about a young man who has just been given a coveted spot on a prestigious airship. He's excited about being part of exciting away missions, until he realizes that it's the lowest-ranking members of the crew (like himself) who are the least likely to survive them. When he stumbles on a secret about the airship, he will have to risk everything in order to save the lives of himself and his crewmates.

3.  Skyward by Brandon Sanderson—This series opener also came highly recommended. It's about a group of teens who are training to be part of an elite squad of fighter pilots. Spensa has always dreamed of being a pilot like her father, but it's because of his disgraceful actions that her chances of being one are next to nil. While she fights her way through flight school, she launches her own clandestine investigation into the truth behind her father's infamous betrayal.

4.  A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw—I read this novel right after I bought it. Even though I didn't end up loving it, I did find it intriguing. It's about a commune hidden in the mountains and the secrets it holds inside its boundaries.

My favorite part of my recent trip to Europe was visiting beautiful Culzean Castle, once the seat of Clan Kennedy in Scotland. Exploring "our" castle with my stepsister (I'm a born Kennedy—she's basically been adopted in) was a fun, moving treat for both of us. She bought me this book about the castle and its history for Christmas:

5.  The 'Magnificent Castle' of Culzean and the Kennedy Family by Michael Moss

My son and his wife got me a gift card to Barnes & Noble for my birthday, which is where I bought these four:

6.  Murder in an Irish Village by Carlene O'Connor—This series opener features the O'Sullivan Family, who run a bistro. When a man is murdered in their restaurant, they find themselves the prime suspects. Siobhán O'Sullivan sets out to clear her family's names by finding the real killer.

7.  Jo & Laurie by Margaret Stohl and Melissa de la CruzLittle Women is one of my favorite books of all time, so I'm all in for this "romantic retelling." Will Jo and Laurie finally get their happily ever after?

8.  Chapter and Curse by Elizabeth Penney—Like the O'Sullivans, the Kimballs have a shop to save. This time, it's a bookstore in England. Molly has to find the killer of one of their customers in order to clear her great-aunt's name.

9.  Plaid and Plagiarism by Molly MacRae—Another first in a cozy mystery series, this is one I've been wanting to read for a while now but haven't been able to find in my local libraries. It also involves murder in a U.K. bookshop, this time in Scotland.

This one was cheap on Kindle, so I snapped it up:

10.  The Wardrobe Mistress by Patrick McGrath—Set during the brutal winter of 1947, this one takes place in a very bleak London. When a famed actor dies, it leaves his widow—the wardrobe mistress—paralyzed with grief. A secret about him comes to light, forcing her down a dark, unexpected path.

There you have it, the last ten books I purchased and received. How about you? Did you get any fun books for Christmas? Have you used your bookish gift cards yet? Which titles have made it into your home, one way or another? I'd truly love to know. Leave a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

    1. A HISTORY OF WILD PLACES definitely has an intriguing premise. The Big Reveal was a little too predictable and unconvincing for me, but I did enjoy the mystery of it all.

Yeah, the thought of weeding through my whole book collection is a *little* daunting!

  5. 75% of your books!? I don't know if I could do that. Good luck!

I love being able to trade in old books for book credit. I do that sometimes with a local bookstore.

    1. Ha ha. Well, my whole collection certainly will not fit into the new house. I'm aiming for 75%, but we'll see how it goes!

I love that my local indie does the trade thing, too. I just wish it were closer. Right now, I trade in my books a couple times a year. Wish I could do it more.

  6. We moved two years ago and I don't envy you, it's quite an ordeal when you have to say goodbye to some beloeved books. I don't care much about the other stuf, I'm not into clothes, only have as many as I need and a lot of them are more than a decade old. But books, that's a totally different matter.

Anyway, I wish you all the best with your move. And enjoy your books.

My TTT this week has a little tweak. What else is new? LOL

    1. I'm the same way! The only thing I really hoard is books. I've got so many now, though, that it's impossible to remember which I do/do not own and where to actually find them in my house. I'm actually really excited about going through them all and paring down. Imagine all the gems I'm going to find that have been lost in my collection for years!

  8. I'm sorry - I'm laughing about your task of book 'weeding'. Since I did that last year, I'm happy that it's you and not me. I've been pretty good at not adding too many to my new location, but I did find that lovely little used bookstore here and also helping with the Friends of Library bookstore and sorting through the donations and things the library has 'weeded' from their shelves means that a few have come in. And also exploring the new library and their shelves.

Susan, good luck with your downsizing. Been there, done that. Enjoy these new books and happy reading in 2022!

  12. That's quite a nice selection of recently acquired books...which are impossible to resist, so don't even try. Now...I do not envy your downsizing move at all because I can't imagine having finally to be faced with the ultimate decision of what to do with all those books. I got rid of a bunch of books a couple of years ago, several hundred that were probably close to 25% of what I owned at the time. And THAT was difficult and painful. I wish you well. :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Luckily, the majority of the books I own are ones that have been sent to me by publishers over the years, so I don't have any real emotional/sentimental/financial attachment to them. Purging would be a lot tougher if I had a more carefully curated collection. I'd say only 1/3 of my books are really ones I've purposely held on to over the years and there are many of those I can probably give away easily since I haven't looked at them in forever and ever. Of course, I haven't started yet, so we'll see how it all goes in actuality...

  20. What a great list of new books. We downsized to a much smaller house about 5 years ago, and I LOVE the smaller house, I hope you do too! I didn't do a top ten this week, but will continue next week. Happy Reading.

    1. As much as I love my big house, I'm definitely done with all the cleaning and upkeep. Plus, since my two oldest have moved out, it's just too much space. I'm looking forward to being in a smaller house that will hopefully stay much tidier and organized!

  21. Downsizing books is tough. It comes down to me touching each one and asking it if i will ever read/re-read it. Usually the book will tell me. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. An excellent strategy! I don't re-read much, so I really need to ask myself, "WHY am I keeping this book?" If I'm not going to revisit it or loan it out or urge my kids to read it, then why am I holding on to it when I could donate it for someone else to enjoy? This sounds like a winning strategy, Anne. Thanks for the advice and thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting!

  22. It's so hard to stop buying books! Downsizing is so very hard. I did a huge purge before moving and we still had soooo many book boxes!!! It's crazy how fast a box fills up. I wish you the best with doing so and the move.

I've been trying to convince my husband for years to move back to Utah, but it hasn't happened, unfortunately :( We're actually moving back into a house we bought in 2004 and lived in for a few years before we adopted our daughter and decided we needed something bigger. It's a smaller house but plenty big enough for the four of us (my oldest two are out of the house now)—just not for all of the stuff we have right now!

  25. Good luck with the downsizing. I made a stab at the bookish part earlier this year and failed miserably! The Jennifer Ryan book looks great and I loved the one book I read by her. I enjoyed Chapter and Curse though it is a bit slower paced. I'm really looking forward to the next book. I'm adding The Wardrobe Mistress to my TBR. That sounds fantastic.

    1. Ha ha. There's a reason my books haven't been sorted through in thirteen years. I don't ever seem to start on a big organizing project unless there's some pressure to do so. Moving definitely makes purging necessary and not just of books, of course. My husband's LEGO collection is vast...

    1. Oh no! Really? Like I said above, most of my collection is made up of books I got free from publishers, so I don't have any sentimental attachment to them. It shouldn't be TOO hard to weed out the ones I'm never going to actually read. We'll see.

      Thanks for popping in, Yvonne!

  32. Oh wow, big change. I am still in the "dream of upsize" stage, but I imagine if I ever got to the point of doing a pro/con list about downsizing, I'd consider "but space for books" to carry as much weight as at least seven reasons in the opposite column. That said, "less space to heat and clean" is pretty appealing too.

I have definitely had some books in my life that I've bought just because I keep checking them out of the library and not getting to it, so you are not alone there.

And aw, Jo & Laurie, a purchase I would make myself. When you get a chance to read it, I'm curious to see if you end up feeling similarly to me, in not *quite* feeling satisfied that I was actually reading about Jo and Laurie as opposed to OCs, or liking it even more.

Chapter & Curse looks pretty fun too, I'll have to look for it on Libby. I don't usually read cozy mysteries but I stumbled into Sheila Connolly's Murder at the Mansion trilogy last year and they were DELIGHTFUL as audiobooks, so I'm going to try for more of those listens in '22.

Is this comment over yet? NOPE, because I just realized you posed fun questions too. I actually did get a gift certificate to a local bookstore as well as to secondhand chain Half Price Books, but so far I've only visited the latter and in lieu of books, I bought a Fancy Target Edition of the last season of The O.C. ("an extra HOUR of bonus content?? need") and 3 bookmarks, because it turns out they have some truly GORGEOUS ones, with tassels, for only fifty cents.

    1. My husband and I have decided that we're done with the accumulation stage. We already have everything we could possibly want and more, so it's time to get rid of the excess. I'll still have space for books, just not as much :)

I'm excited for JO & LAURIE. Obviously, it's not Alcott, but I'm still interested to see what the authors do with the story.

I've been meaning to read Connolly's series, but I haven't gotten to it yet. One of these days!

I'm glad you had fun with your gift certificates. It's always a joy to buy books, but especially when someone else pays for them. LOL.

We still have a lot of stuff in storage for when we stop traveling, but in terms of day-to-day living, we went from a 1600 sq ft house to a 190 sq ft camper when we first started traveling with my husband's job. We knew that was too small for long-term but it was what we had at the time. We've upgraded to about 330 sq ft now. It's nice to have so very little to clean and practically nothing to dust. And no yardwork! Culling and storing my books was the hardest part though, not gonna lie. You can do it!

My husband and I just started watching Star Trek: Discovery. One character really turned me off at the beginning. I muttered, "Too bad he's not a redshirt" at my husband, who was completely lost. I thought we all knew the redshirts get killed first. Apparently not! It makes me laugh that you just bought a book about that very thing.

Would you believe I have never actually finished Little Women? I've read Little Men lots of times. But this is my year! It's been on my Classics Club list and I'm going to use it to fulfill my Classics Challenge prompt for May.

    1. I can't imagine living in 330 feet of space, but it does sound freeing in a way. And, you're right, so much less space to clean!

I seriously had not ever heard the term "redshirt" before someone mentioned the book to me. When I heard it, though, it instantly made sense. I used to watch Voyager occasionally...

You know what's funny? I've never finished LITTLE MEN. I just get bored with it. I've read LITTLE WOMEN lots of times. Funny that we're flip-flopped.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jen!

    1. Thank you! Downsizing is going to be quite the job, especially going through my books. It's daunting, not gonna lie.

      Thanks for popping by, Isabelle!

  40. Oh wow, I can't imagine downsizing to a house half the size of what I'm currently living in, although it would definitely provide a nice opportunity to purge a lot of stuff I should have parted ways with years ago, lol. Looks like some great new additions. The Wardrobe Mistress sounds especially intriguing.

    1. We've lived in this house for 13 years and since it's so big we haven't stopped ourselves from buying whatever the heck we want to buy! Needless to say, we have A LOT of purging to do. I mean, we still have a VCR (that doesn't really work) and stacks of old VHS tapes as well as a ton of other old crap lying around. Some stuff, at least, will not be hard to get rid of at all!

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Suzanne!

    2. Haha, I know the feeling. We moved two years ago after living in the last house for twenty years. And both our sons had moved out in the meantime and still not an apartment of their own.

  41. It's so hard to get rid of books, especially that many! Best of luck with the sorting and moving! I might have to check out Jo and Laurie eventually... and maybe Chapter and Curse.

    1. Yeah, it will be interesting to sort through all my books and see which are easy to get rid of and which give me pause. I guess that will tell me which ones are worth keeping and which are not!

      Thanks for dropping in, Holliehocks!
