2019: A Year of Reading, By the Numbers

Total Books Read:  168 (19 more than last year; 18 fewer than my highest of 186 in 2011; 53 more than my lowest of 115 in 2008)

Number of fiction books read:  162 (96%)
Number of non-fiction books read:  6 (4%)
Number of adult books read:  129 (77%)
Number of young adult books read:  28 (17%)
Number of middle grade/chapter books read:  11 (7%)
Number of books by female authors:  143 (85%)
Number of books by male authors:  21 (13%)
Number of books by multiple authors, female and male:  4 (2%)
Number of books by Latter-day Saint authors:  13 (8%)
Number of books read, personal collection:  44 (26%)
Number of books read, review copies:  77 (46%)
Number of books read, borrowed from the library:  47 (28%)
Number of reading challenges joined:  5
Number of reading challenges completed:  1 (although I got closer than I ever have on reading a book from every state + Washington, D.C.)

Speaking of tracking where the books I read are set, here are the Top 3 states and the Top 3 countries I "visited" most this year:

1.  Washington and Florida - tie (8), last year was New York (9)
2.  New York and Ohio - tie (7), last year was California (7)
3.  California and Texas - tie (6), last year was Massachusetts (5) -- Exciting update!  I finished a Texas book early this morning, so Texas beats out California to make a triple-way tie between it, New York, and Ohio, leaving California by itself in 3rd place.

1.  The United States (110 + some that were in U.S. but didn't specify a state)
2.  England (17)
3.  Canada (7)

    1. Thanks! I fell short of my goal of reading 200 books, but I didn't do too badly in the end.

      Happy New Year!

  2. Wow, that's an impressive total of books read for 2019! Well done. Interested in your American states challenge. I'm doing a long-term one over many years, trying to read a book from every state. Not sure where I am with that, must check and see how far I need to go to complete it.

    1. It's not as many books as I wanted, but that's okay. I read a lot and was fairly satisfied with my picks for 2019. We'll see what 2020 brings

The states reading challenge is fun. It always interests me to see where books are set, so it's fun for me to try to get all 50 states.

      Happy New Year, Cath!

    1. I did have a pretty good reading year. I would have liked a higher total and more "A" grade reads, but it's always a mixed bag, you know?

      Happy New Year!

  4. Well, of course, Texas beats out California. LOL

You had another great year...and I always enjoy reading the stats of other bloggers, so this was one of my favorite posts of yours all year long.

Here's to another great reading decade ahead of us...Happy New Year!

    1. Ha ha. Usually, New York and California are almost always my top two. Three depends a little, but I did end up reading a lot of Texas books this year!

I love end-of-the-year posts, too. Reflection is always an interesting practice, isn't it?

      Happy New Year, Sam!

  5. Good job! It looks like you read 6 more non-fiction books than I did. Ha! I really don't read non-fiction anymore. Tracking my locations showed me how few books are set in the middle of the country when it comes to YA (except IL, and when I say IL, I mean Chicago). NY (63) edged out CA (62) for me, but no other states really come close.

    1. Right? The Midwest seems to really get the shaft in popular fiction. The state that is absolutely the hardest for me to find books set in for some reason is Arkansas! I can only think of ONE book I've read set in Arkansas over my whole reading career. Poor Arkansas :(

New York is almost always #1 on my list. There are SO many books set there, both in NYC and Upstate.

      Happy New Year, Sam!

  6. You've been a reading crazy woman, Susan! I always laugh at the number of reviews that show up here toward the end of the year. I can picture you madly writing them - ha! In any case, here's to some great reading in 2020. Happy New Year!

    1. Ha ha. Right? EVERY YEAR, I end up doing the same thing. My 2020 blogging goal needs to be to keep up with reviews so I don't have to madly write reviews in the last couple weeks of December. LOL

  8. I love lists, especially bookish lists! Thanks for so much info, some authors I read but didn't get to the titles you've read, and new ones to explore. Hope your reading in the new year takes off in an exciting way.
