Top Ten Tuesday: Punny Cozy Mystery Titles to Make You Smile
7:20 AM
One of the most fun Top Ten Tuesday topics that has come up this year was Book Titles That Would Make Awesome Band Names. I blanked on that one and I'm having the same problem with today's prompt: Book Titles That Would Make Great Song Titles. I love music as much as the next person, but for some reason, song topics make my brain short out. Thus, I'm going rogue today. Not too rogue as I'm going to stick with book titles—I just decided to highlight some punny ones that make me laugh. Cozy mystery titles are all about playing with words, so all the ones on my list come from that genre. I haven't read any of them, but they all sound entertaining!
Speaking of cozy mysteries, there was some discussion on my blog the other day (see this post) about what makes a mystery "cozy." Generally, books in the genre adhere to these loose guidelines:
- Content is clean—sex, violence, and untoward behavior occur off-screen. There is little to no cursing.
- Stories take place in close, intimate settings like small towns and tight-knit communities within larger cities.
- The mystery solver is an amateur sleuth, not a professional detective, and is typically a woman.
- Despite whatever murder and mayhem may be taking place within their pages, cozies maintain a positive, upbeat vibe.
If you're still confused, check out these posts by my cozy go-to girl Katherine over at I Wish I Lived in a Library—Five Signs You're in a Cozy Mystery, and Five Signs You're Not and Ten Books Everyone Who Wants to Read a Cozy Mystery Should Try.

My Top Ten Favorite Punny Cozy Mystery Book Titles
A Tale of Two Biddies by Kylie Logan
To Brie or Not to Brie by Avery Aames
It's a Wonderful Knife by Christine Wenger
Foreign Eclairs by Julie Hyzy
Better Off Thread by Amanda Lee
Cheddar Off Dead by Julia Buckley
Freezer I'll Shoot by Victoria Hamilton
Roast Mortem by Cleo Coyle
A Sheetcake Named Desire by Jacklyn Brady
Flour in the Attic by Winnie Archer
Ahhh, there's nothing like a good pun, is there? And these are nothing like good puns! Just kidding, but even the terrible ones make me smile :)
How about you? Are you a cozy addict or do you avoid them like the plague? I used to be a hater, but after inhaling all kinds of dark, gruesome mystery/thrillers, I have come to really appreciate the lightness I feel after reading books in this genre. Sure, they're far-fetched, even silly, but sometimes I just crave an easy, entertaining mystery that's not going to give me nightmares. I am picky about the series I read, though. So far, my favorites are: The Noodle Shop series by Vivien Chien, the Sloan Krause series by Ellie Alexander, the Cookie House series by Eve Calder, and the Amish Candy Shop series by Amanda Flower. Which cozies are your favorites? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

I sure enjoy cozy mysteries on occasion. :)
ReplyDeleteMy <a href="lydiaschoch.com/“>post</a>.
Same! I don't read them ALL the time, but I do like to sandwich them between heavier reads since they're light, fun, easy reads.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Lydia!
The puns of these titles made me laugh and groan. Yes they would make good songs too. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/11/ttt-111020.html
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think of them as song titles, but you're right. Weird Al Yankovich would totally sing some of these! LOL.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, PM!
Oh, this was a wonderful spin on the meme. I love puns (esp. since I'm so bad at them myself). Freezer, Sheetcake and Knife were my favorites. Thanks for sharing the humor!
ReplyDeleteI'm always impressed by how many different ones cozy title writers come up with! Some of them are really clever, others super awful. They all make me smile :)
DeleteThanks for coming by, Lexlingua!
I am not a cozy mystery reader, that's Carmen's area, but I did enjoy reading these titles!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by MBJ
The genre isn't for everyone and that's okay! I haven't always liked cozy mysteries, so I totally get it.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Sash!
These all make me smile and I actually think they could have been good song titles, too!
ReplyDeleteThat's what PM said up above, too. I honestly didn't even think of them as song titles, but you're right - they work! I did today's topic without even realizing it. LOL.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Deanna!
Your list made me laugh! I think "Freezer I'll Shoot" is my favorite. :-) Love these covers too.
ReplyDeleteI think FREEZER I'LL SHOOT is my favorite, too, although I admit it took me a second to get the pun. LOL. I'm kind of slow!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Andie!
Great twist on this week's prompt! Cozy mysteries have such great titles. :)
ReplyDeleteThey really do. If you don't like cozy mysteries for any other reason, you at least have to appreciate their punny titles!
DeleteThanks for coming by, Tanya!
I haven't read a cozy mystery in a while and these puns are killing me :) Happy TTT!
ReplyDeleteRight? They're total groaners, but I appreciate the creativity behind them. Someone had fun making them up!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Natalie!
Nice! I've never heard of any of these mysteries, but the clean, cozy genre sounds like something I'd enjoy.
ReplyDeleteYou should give it a try! There are lots of cozy series out there, so you should be able to find at least one that appeals.
DeleteThanks for coming by, JadeSky!
I love a good cozy title. Freezer I'll Shoot made me smile :)
ReplyDeleteI agree. They just give me the grins! And who doesn't need that these days? Or any day, really.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Greg!
Awesome rogue post! :) "Flour In the Attic" does give me a country music vibe.
ReplyDeleteOoh, yes, I can see it as a country song. Something about baking with your grandma in her country kitchen ...
DeleteThanks for coming by, Vonze!
I had a good chuckle at some of these! I reckon a couple of them would make great band titles like Foreign Eclairs!
ReplyDeleteYes! I would listen to The Foreign Eclairs. That's a great band title.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Sharlene!
I can't get enough of the music-related TTT themes! These puns are quite punny, though. :D
ReplyDeleteHere's my TTT list this week.
I honestly can't figure out why my brain shorts out with these musical TTT topics. I listen to lots of music, so they really shouldn't be that hard! I had fun with the puns, though :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lectrice!
Cozy mysteries do have some great punny titles. These totally made me laugh. :)
ReplyDeleteRight? Someone had a good ole time coming up with them!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
This is a sub-genre I always swear I will read from. I liked the little primer though and will have to keep these in mind, should I even follow through.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. Well, cozies are usually very quick, easy reads so you could whip through one really fast. Might be worth a try!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
These titles are all so cute. I love puns! :)
ReplyDeleteThey're fun, aren't they? Even the really bad ones get me to grin!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Suzanne!
Wonderful, I love a good punny title. My favourite cozy title is The Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton. :-D
ReplyDeleteTHE QUICHE OF DEATH is a great, punny title! I haven't read anything by Beaton. I'll have to give her a try.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!
Fabulous idea for a post. I think I like To Brie or Not to Brie best.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's a great one! Who can resist a cheese-y pun? LOL.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Deb!
Thank you for explaining cozy mysteries! These titles are really fun (I am up for a good pun).
ReplyDeleteCozies definitely have their own genre rules and most of them follow them to a T. Including the punny titles :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
A Tale of Two Biddies!! haha.. love this post! I totally am for more of a light hearted mystery too since I don't like scary stories! Great list :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd probably enjoy cozies! They're light and fun - all the bad stuff happens off-screen, so they're not gory or scary. Just entertaining. As a plus, the titles will make you smile :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Leslie!
It was a lovely post to start a dreary Wednesday morning lockdown day!
ReplyDeleteAre you still in lockdown? Or in lockdown again? Either way, ugh. I'm glad my post could brighten your day a little!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Mystica!
I knew you'd find a great twist. Brilliant titles. I loved them.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I tend to overthink the prompts and then my mind just blanks! I did have fun with the punny titles, though :) I'm not keen on next week's topic either, so I'll have to think of a new twist for next time.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
Same here. I've never had a pet, I'm not an animal type of person. But I'm sure I can come up with something. Mind you, maybe I'll check what twist you found first. LOOOOOL
DeleteI don't read a lot of cozy mysteries (or mysteries at all for that matter) but the punny titles always make me kind of want to. Your list definitely had me chuckling. Have a great week. - Katie
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my list put a smile on your face :) Even if you hate cozy mysteries, ya gotta love the punny titles - or at least appreciate the creativity behind them!
DeleteThanks for coming by!
Great spin on the topic! My husband groans like I've stabbed him when I share puns with him. Needless to say, I'll be reading your list to him. ;-) They sure made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteThe only cozy mysteries I'm currently reading are the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters. Egyptology, a dash of romance, a pinch of humor, and murder? Yes, please. I've read plenty of other series though. They're nice palate cleansers between heavier works.
Ha ha. I hope you tortured the poor man good with these puns :)
DeleteI enjoy the Amelia Peabody series as well, although it's been years since I've read from it. I need to get back to it.
Thanks for stopping by, Jen!
So many adorable books
ReplyDeleteCozy mysteries really are adorable - just fun, easy reads that keep you entertained without making you think too much :)
DeleteThanks for coming by!
I haven't read any cozy mysteries yet, but I love a good pun and so of course also all these titles! Especially Freezer I'll Shoot :)
ReplyDeleteFREEZER I'LL SHOOT really is a good one :) It makes me smile for sure!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Lindsey!
I absolutely adore cozy mysteries, so this list is perfect. As great as darker reads can be, there's something comforting about dipping into the lighter side of things with a cozy. You've listed a few of my favorites, but a series that just came out that I really enjoyed is Murder Most Sweet by Laura Jensen Walker.
ReplyDeleteBut pun titles! I really love Flour in the Attic—too funny.
Absolutely. I love mystery/thrillers of all kinds, but my heart and soul feel A LOT lighter after reading cozies than after reading darker ones. I haven't heard of MURDER MOST SWEET - I'll definitely look it up. Thanks for the rec!
DeleteThanks for coming by, Christopher!
Oh thanks for the mention! Cozies are definitely my favorite genre and I can't lie - part of the reason is the titles! I do love a good pun and you've chosen some great ones!
ReplyDeleteOf course! Whenever I need a cozy rec, I turn to your blog. You're the cozy queen :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
Oh my gosh, cozy mystery titles are my FAVORITES. I get ridiculously excited when the library gets a new one in, just because I want to see what the title is, because the puns are so cute. xD This is a great list of titles! A Tale of Two Biddies is definitely my favorite (though Roast Mortem actually makes me think of Buzzfeed Unsolved haha).
ReplyDeleteOMG this is exactly the kind of title I'd loooove to read!
