Cozy Christmas Collection Provides Swoony, Light Hearted Holiday Entertainment (with a Giveaway!)
4:06 PM
(Image from Amazon)
I haven't even put up my Halloween decorations yet, but I just finished a cozy Christmas read that put me right into the holiday spirit! A Christmas Courting is a collection of four short Regency romances set at Yuletide. Three popular LDS romance writers—Jennifer Moore, Chalon Linton, and Jen Geigle Johnson—are featured, as well as newcomer Heidi Kimball (her first novel, An Unlikely Courtship, came out in September).

Love and Joy Come to You by Jennifer Moore concerns a young gentleman whose peaceful holiday is interrupted by a family of rowdy houseguests his mother has invited for the holidays. Although, at first, Lord Covington is annoyed by the orphaned children, he soon grows to love them, with an especial fondness for the beautiful, enchanting eldest.
A Christmas Courting by Chalon Linton is about Keturah Hensley, a young lady who pines for her handsome childhood friend, Christopher. When he asks her aid in helping him woo a wife, she worries this Christmas will be the worst she's ever experienced.
Mistletoe Memories by Jen Geigle Johnson revolves around Lady Alice Tarrington, a young woman whose tarnished reputation has made her the center of London gossip. When her childhood best friend, the man who swore he would return from India and marry her as soon as possible, finally comes to town, Alice fears it's too late for any kind of relationship between them.
Second-Chance Christmas by Heidi Kimball centers around spirited Francie Lockhart, who fears her refusal of a marriage proposal from her best friend has destroyed their relationship forever. When a beautiful guest shows up at Gerard's house for Christmas, a surprising jealousy rises up in Francie. Has she been wrong about her true feelings for the man she's only ever considered a pal?
While the first and last stories are my favorite, I enjoyed all four. They're fun, playful tales set against magical, snowy backgrounds. A Christmas Courting will appeal to any Regency romance lover and would make for an especially heartwarming read when enjoyed in front of a crackling fire, a steaming cup of cocoa in hand. If you're not a fan but you've got one on your Christmas list, this volume would make an appealing gift.
(Readalikes: Reminds me of other Regency romances by the above authors as well as those by Josi S. Kilpack, Sarah M. Eden, and Julianne Donaldson)
Grade:
If this were a movie, it would be rated:
for vague references to violence and ruined reputations
To the FTC, with love: I received a finished copy of A Christmas Courting from the generous folks at Covenant in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

"Modern" Pimpernel Novel Offers a Fun, Feminine Twist (With a Giveaway!)
1:00 AM

Lady Scarlet Cavendish, a wealthy English widow, wears many disguises. At home, she masquerades as a feather-headed, fashion-obsessed debutante. While in France, she plays a harmless hag, a clever seamstress, a guillotine groupie, even a soldier—anything to aid the innocent victims of the country's bloody revolution. Her most secret identity, the one she guards with her very life, is that of the Pimpernel. A daring spy, the Pimpernel is a "man" of mystery who specializes in whisking French aristocrats out of the country right under the noses of their accusers. No one would believe a moneyed, well-bred society lady like Scarlet capable of such derring-do, which is the very reason she must pretend to be as incapable as possible. Lives depend on her ability to act a part (or two or three).

I barely know anything about The Scarlet Pimpernel—the fictional hero of a series of novels penned by Baroness Orczy in the early 1900s—but I still enjoyed Jen Geigle Johnson's Scarlet, a "modern" twist on the classic tale. The story stars a likable couple, whose exploits are marked by action/adventure, humor, and romance. Scarlet makes a convincing heroine, although her antics definitely get far-fetched. Although it deals with serious issues, overall Scarlet is a fun, enjoyable novel that is both entertaining and compelling. At just over 200 pages, it's quick, it's clean (besides innuendo and some passionate kissing), and it's captivating. If you're looking for a light, romantic tale, definitely give this one a try.

Regency Romance with Substance Makes for an Enjoyable Read (With a Giveaway!)
8:25 PM
(Image from Barnes & Noble)
As the daughter of an illustrious duke, Lady Amanda Cumberland enjoys a life of wealth and privilege. In London for her first Season, the 16-year-old should have only one thing on her mind—fun. With two handsome, eligible lords courting her, her days have become infinitely more exciting, but still, something is missing. Lady Amanda longs to do something real. When she hears a stirring speech by Henry Hunt championing equal rights for all, his words sink deep into her soul. She vows to do all she can, even if it must be done secretly, to help common Englishmen—and women—achieve the dreams of freedom and equality.
Lord Nathaniel Halloway is known as the biggest rake in London. It's a facade he's carefully cultivated to hide his true passion—aiding the lower classes in their fight for freedom. His role in the campaign is bigger than anyone could guess; if the other members of the ton found out, the consequences would be unimaginable. Lord Nathaniel must play his part in their glittering world of excess and abandon in order to divert high society's fickle attention away from his true activities.
With her father pressuring her into choosing a husband, Lady Amanda must do some pretty play-acting of her own. Both play their roles to near perfection. Will their frivolous masks keep them from uniting—not just in a noble cause but in a love that could burn brighter than anything they've ever known?
I've been known to enjoy a fluffy Regency romance now and then, but I like them even better when they've got some substance behind them. The Nobleman's Daughter, a debut novel by Jen Geigle Johnson, offers up just that. Using England's turn-of-the-century fight for equal rights as a backdrop, the author creates a tension-filled romance that keeps the reader enthralled as it winds down to its inevitable Happily Ever After. The story's predictable; it's also exciting, fun, and engrossing. Nothing overly original, but it's enjoyable overall.
