Historical Australian Murder Mystery Atmospheric and Intriguing

Although World War I gave Penelope Jane "P.J." Martindale a unique chance to travel and have an exciting adventure, it also stole two very important people from her. While grieving the deaths of her twin brothers, she visits London's Natural History Museum where she makes an intriguing discovery. A fossil found in a gorge near the Australian town of her birth, a place where her brothers loved to search for ancient treasures, gives P.J. a new purpose—to honor her dead siblings through the fossils they loved to collect. When P.J. returns to Australia, she's shocked to receive a frosty reception from her father, who blames her for his sons' deaths. Hoping to make peace with him and commemorate her brothers' sacrifice at the same time, she heads for Bow Wow Gorge despite warnings from the locals about its sinister reputation. Seventy years ago, an eccentric female paleontologist is said to have disappeared in its bowels under suspicious circumstances along with several of her young pupils. While wandering in the gorge, P.J. stumbles across a skeleton in a hidden cave. Thinking she's just accidentally solved an old mystery, she's stunned when the coroner announces that the unidentified corpse was the victim of a murder. Who was the deceased? What happened to them? And how did they come to lie in a cave full of priceless fossils?
Ever since reading and enjoying Tea Cooper's The Woman in the Green Dress, I've wanted to read more by the author. I was thrilled to receive an e-ARC of her newest, The Fossil Hunter, which has already been released in Australia but doesn't come out in the U.S. until August. Told in a dual-timeline format, the novel features likable characters, a plotline that's compelling (although slow), and an atmospheric setting. I'm not into fossils, so I found that part of the story a little dull. I also wasn't wild about P.J.'s romance with Sam, since I didn't feel any sparks between them and I thought him irritating in his irresponsibility and impulsiveness. Other than that, though, The Fossil Hunter kept me interested enough to keep turning pages. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did The Woman in the Green Dress, but I liked it overall.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Bright, Shiny, and New
I don't know about you, but it doesn't matter how many books I have gathering dust on my shelves waiting to be read, my head is still turned by the shiny and new! I'm an excitement-is-overrated kind of girl about most things. When it comes to books, though? The FOMO is real, apparently. I do try to alternate new books with older picks for variety's sake, but I always end up reading more new releases than I think I will in a given year. On that note, I'm embracing today's TTT topic: Top Ten Most Anticipated Books Releasing in the First Half of 2022. I've already shared several of the ones I'm most excited about, so in this list I'm going to talk about books you haven't heard me chattering about before. It's a mix of historical fiction (of course), mysteries (naturally), and even a dystopian thriller (still a fan).

Top Ten Most Anticipated Books Releasing in the First Half of 2022

1. At the End of Everything by Marieke Nijkamp (available January 25)—In this YA thriller, a group of teens is intent on breaking out of their treatment center. When they do, they discover that a deadly pandemic is sweeping the outside world. As things quickly go from bad to worst, they have to figure out how to survive.
2. Drawn by the Current by Jocelyn Green (available February 1)—I read the first two books in the Windy City Saga last year. This third volume revolves around Olive Pierce, who narrowly misses a terrible death when the tour ship she's on rolls over, killing almost half of its passengers and crew. Olive's best friend is among them. Although Olive tries to put the tragedy behind her, she can't help investigating what really happened to her friend.
3. The Tobacco Wives by Adele Myers (available March 1)—When Maddie Sykes, a young seamstress, arrives in Bright Leaf, North Carolina, she's in awe of the bright, bustling town that thrives on the profits being made by Big Tobacco. It's not long before Maddie realizes the place has a dark side. As many women battle significant health problems, she seems to see a link between their suffering and Bright Leaf's cash crop. Should she bring her concerns to the town's tobacco bigwigs? Or will being a whistleblower destroy everything she's worked so hard to build for herself?
4. Cheddar Off Dead by Korina Moss (available March 29)—I'm always up for a fun cozy mystery and what's cozier than cheese? In this first installment in a new series, a woman looking for a fresh start opens up a cheese shop in Sonoma Valley. When a sharp-tongued food critic visits the store and ends up dead, she becomes a suspect. Soon, the cheesemonger is playing detective in order to clear her own name.
5. The Silent Unseen by Amanda McCrina (available April 5)—It's 1944 and teenaged Maria is returning home to her Polish village after being forced to labor for the Nazis. She's stunned to discover her village has been razed and her parents killed in a bloody battle between the Polish resistance and Ukrainian nationalists. To her astonishment, the leader of the resistance is her brother. When he goes missing, Maria is forced to enlist the help of a Ukrainian boy she doesn't trust to help her find him.
6. The Unquiet Dead by Stacie Murphy (available April 5)—I enjoyed A Deadly Fortune, the first book in Murphy's supernatural Gilded Age mystery series, so I'm excited for the second installment. In this one, Amelia Matthew is using her newfound talent for communing with the dead to make a decent living at a New York nightclub. When she encounters the spirit of a recently-murdered girl, she doesn't want to get involved. Then a young Black man connected with the nightclub gets accused of the killing, and Amelia can no longer stand idly by. Once again, she becomes embroiled in a perilous investigation that could put her and everyone she loves in danger.
7. The Book Woman's Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson (available May 3)—I'm sure I'm not the only one who's excited for this sequel to the popular The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. I've actually had an e-ARC of the book for a couple months now, but I haven't managed to get to it yet.
8. Breathless by Amy McCulloch (available May 3)—In this mystery/thriller, a journalist and beginning mountain climber agrees to scale a treacherous peak in order to get the story of a lifetime. The least experienced member of the climbing team by far, she grows concerned as the group endures a series of unfortunate accidents and suspicious deaths. With nowhere to go, she finds herself in a desperate fight for her life—in more ways than one.
9. A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong (available May 31)—I enjoy Armstrong's Rockton series, so I'm all in for her newest book, a time-travel murder mystery. The story revolves around a homicide detective in modern day who is stunned to find herself suddenly in Victorian Scotland. When a young man is strangled to death, she investigates the case, hoping it will lead her back to her real life.
10. The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill (available June 7)—When a woman's scream pierces the quiet of the reading room at the Boston Public Library, security guards go into immediate action. While the scream is being investigated, patrons are detained. Four strangers, all of whom were sitting at the same table at the time of the incident, spend the time getting to know one another. As alliances are struck and secrets are revealed, one of them will be unmasked as a murderer.

Goodbye, 2021. Hello, 2022!
Happy New Year! I usually do this annual wrap-up/stats on January 1, but I want to have the blog all turned over and ready to go for 2022 before tomorrow, so...here we go. I had an excellent reading year, at least as far as numbers go. Let's see how it all broke down:
Total Books Read: 203—for the first time ever, I reached my goal of reading 200 books in a year. Yay! Last year, I read 191, so a definite improvement.
Number of fiction books read: 193 (95%)—I made a tiny bit more of an effort to read more non-fiction this year...
Number of adult books read: 121 (60%)—As much as I love children's literature, the bulk of my reading is always in the adult category. This has remained very consistent over the years.
Number of YA books read: 21 (10%)—I'm reading fewer and fewer teen books every year, it seems.
Number of MG books read: 61 (30%)—Thanks to the Cybils Awards and another book award program I help judge most years, I read a lot of middle-grade novels.
Number of books by female authors: 177 (87%)—Another thing I remain very consistent on is reading mostly female authors. I guess it's mostly women writing in the genres I like?
Number of books by male authors: 26 (13%)—My percentage rate on this one is actually a teensy bit higher this year than last.
Number of books by male/female combo: 1 (.005%)
Number of books read, personal collection: 25 (12%)—Oops! I did not do a very good job in this category.
Number of books read, review copies: 52 (26%)—This percentage is down from last year.
Number of books read, borrowed from library: 126 (62%)—I love the library! Last year, 53% of my reads were from the library. I'm glad to see that this number has gone up.
Number of books read, paper: 141 (69%)—I'll always be a fan of "real" books!
Number of books read, electronic: 44 (22%)
Number of books read, audio: 18 (9%)—I only listened to 6 audiobooks last year. This year, I had one going all the time, hence the elevated number.

Too Many Reading Challenges? No Such Thing!
One last post for the day...I promise!
You all know how much I adore my reading challenges. I love seeing new ones pop up this time of year. There are so many great ones out there for 2022; believe you me, I wanted to join them all! I managed to limit myself to *just* ten. Before you all stage an intervention, recognize that the first five aren't all that challenging because they encompass what I usually read and track anyway. The last five, though? Well, we'll see how I do.
1. 2022 Literary Escapes Challenge hosted by Lori @Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book
This is probably my favorite challenge ever, so I do it every year. It requires reading one book set in each of the 50 U.S. states, plus D.C. You also get points for reading books set in other countries.
2. 2022 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Marg @The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader
Since I rocked this challenge so hard this year, I'm going to join at the highest level once again. I'm going "Prehistoric" by pledging to read 50+ books.

I'm still enjoying my cozy reading, although I didn't read as many as I wanted to in 2021. For 2022, I'm going to join at the "Peckish" level once again. That involves reading 1-25 cozies, so that shouldn't be too tough.

I always enjoy doing this yearly challenge, so I'm signing up again. Let's see if I can beat 11th place in 2022!
5. Cloak and Dagger Reading Challenge 2022 hosted by Carol @Carol's Notebook
I'm not sure why I've never joined this annual challenge before since it's right up my alley. All you have to do is read mystery books (including suspense/thriller/crime, etc.). Easy peasy! I'm joining at the highest level—Sherlock Holmes (naturally)—which requires you to read 56+ mystery books.
6. Booklist Queen's 2022 Reading Challenge hosted by Rachael @Booklist Queen
This challenge requires you to read books from 52 different reading prompts. There are lots of fun ones this year.
7. Aussie Author Reading Challenge 2022 hosted by Jo @Booklover Book Reviews
I'm super excited for this one, which requires reading books by Australian authors. There's even a lucrative prize for the person who posts the most reviews of books that fit the challenge requirements! I can always use book money, so I'm going to go for the "Emu" level. It's described as follows: Read and review 24 books written by Australian Authors of which at least 10 of those authors are female, at least 10 of those authors are male, and at least 10 of those authors are new to you; Fiction or non-fiction, at least 4 different genre. Sounds fun!
8. 2022 Nonfiction Reader Challenge hosted by Shelleyrae @Book'd Out
I didn't read tons of non-fiction this year, but I quite enjoyed the ones I did read. So, I'm thinking taking on this challenge will be a good way to push me to read more in this genre. I'm going to do the "Nonfiction Grazer" level, which involves reading any nonfiction books and setting your own goal. Since I only read ten non-fiction books this year, I think I'll push myself a bit and set my goal at 20.
As the title suggests, this challenge has 50 prompts to fulfill.
10. 2022 Build Your Library Reading Challenge by Emily @Build Your Library
Prompt-based challenges are my jam, as you can clearly see! This one has 40, all of which have something to do with having an adventure.
Whew! What do you think? Can I finish all these? Since I can use one book for prompts on multiple challenge lists, I think it's doable. Even if I totally fail, at least I'll have fun finding new books to read. Wish me luck!
