Top Ten Tuesday: The Bright, Shiny, and New
2:06 PM
I don't know about you, but it doesn't matter how many books I have gathering dust on my shelves waiting to be read, my head is still turned by the shiny and new! I'm an excitement-is-overrated kind of girl about most things. When it comes to books, though? The FOMO is real, apparently. I do try to alternate new books with older picks for variety's sake, but I always end up reading more new releases than I think I will in a given year. On that note, I'm embracing today's TTT topic: Top Ten Most Anticipated Books Releasing in the First Half of 2022. I've already shared several of the ones I'm most excited about, so in this list I'm going to talk about books you haven't heard me chattering about before. It's a mix of historical fiction (of course), mysteries (naturally), and even a dystopian thriller (still a fan).
Before we do that, though, be sure to hop on over to That Artsy Reader Girl and give our hostess, Jana, some love. Consider joining in the TTT fun, won't you? It really is a good time!
Top Ten Most Anticipated Books Releasing in the First Half of 2022
(by release date)
1. At the End of Everything by Marieke Nijkamp (available January 25)—In this YA thriller, a group of teens is intent on breaking out of their treatment center. When they do, they discover that a deadly pandemic is sweeping the outside world. As things quickly go from bad to worst, they have to figure out how to survive.
2. Drawn by the Current by Jocelyn Green (available February 1)—I read the first two books in the Windy City Saga last year. This third volume revolves around Olive Pierce, who narrowly misses a terrible death when the tour ship she's on rolls over, killing almost half of its passengers and crew. Olive's best friend is among them. Although Olive tries to put the tragedy behind her, she can't help investigating what really happened to her friend.
3. The Tobacco Wives by Adele Myers (available March 1)—When Maddie Sykes, a young seamstress, arrives in Bright Leaf, North Carolina, she's in awe of the bright, bustling town that thrives on the profits being made by Big Tobacco. It's not long before Maddie realizes the place has a dark side. As many women battle significant health problems, she seems to see a link between their suffering and Bright Leaf's cash crop. Should she bring her concerns to the town's tobacco bigwigs? Or will being a whistleblower destroy everything she's worked so hard to build for herself?
4. Cheddar Off Dead by Korina Moss (available March 29)—I'm always up for a fun cozy mystery and what's cozier than cheese? In this first installment in a new series, a woman looking for a fresh start opens up a cheese shop in Sonoma Valley. When a sharp-tongued food critic visits the store and ends up dead, she becomes a suspect. Soon, the cheesemonger is playing detective in order to clear her own name.
5. The Silent Unseen by Amanda McCrina (available April 5)—It's 1944 and teenaged Maria is returning home to her Polish village after being forced to labor for the Nazis. She's stunned to discover her village has been razed and her parents killed in a bloody battle between the Polish resistance and Ukrainian nationalists. To her astonishment, the leader of the resistance is her brother. When he goes missing, Maria is forced to enlist the help of a Ukrainian boy she doesn't trust to help her find him.
6. The Unquiet Dead by Stacie Murphy (available April 5)—I enjoyed A Deadly Fortune, the first book in Murphy's supernatural Gilded Age mystery series, so I'm excited for the second installment. In this one, Amelia Matthew is using her newfound talent for communing with the dead to make a decent living at a New York nightclub. When she encounters the spirit of a recently-murdered girl, she doesn't want to get involved. Then a young Black man connected with the nightclub gets accused of the killing, and Amelia can no longer stand idly by. Once again, she becomes embroiled in a perilous investigation that could put her and everyone she loves in danger.
7. The Book Woman's Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson (available May 3)—I'm sure I'm not the only one who's excited for this sequel to the popular The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. I've actually had an e-ARC of the book for a couple months now, but I haven't managed to get to it yet.
8. Breathless by Amy McCulloch (available May 3)—In this mystery/thriller, a journalist and beginning mountain climber agrees to scale a treacherous peak in order to get the story of a lifetime. The least experienced member of the climbing team by far, she grows concerned as the group endures a series of unfortunate accidents and suspicious deaths. With nowhere to go, she finds herself in a desperate fight for her life—in more ways than one.
9. A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong (available May 31)—I enjoy Armstrong's Rockton series, so I'm all in for her newest book, a time-travel murder mystery. The story revolves around a homicide detective in modern day who is stunned to find herself suddenly in Victorian Scotland. When a young man is strangled to death, she investigates the case, hoping it will lead her back to her real life.
10. The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill (available June 7)—When a woman's scream pierces the quiet of the reading room at the Boston Public Library, security guards go into immediate action. While the scream is being investigated, patrons are detained. Four strangers, all of whom were sitting at the same table at the time of the incident, spend the time getting to know one another. As alliances are struck and secrets are revealed, one of them will be unmasked as a murderer.
There you have it, ten releases I'm looking forward to reading. Do we have any in common? Which up-and-comers are you excited about? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

Love the sound of The Tobacco Wives!
ReplyDeleteSounds intriguing, doesn't it??
DeleteThanks for popping in, Maria!
It is so hard to not want to read ALLLLL the new books! I struggle so hard. I try to start the year saying I will not and read more of my own books but it doesn't last long. lol. I hope that you and I both do better with that this year. When we end up reading all the new releases instead, I hope we both enjoy them all! :)
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha. Amen! I try to balance new and old reads, but you just never know. Anything can happen around here :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leslie!
I haven't heard of a lot of these. I'm really out of the loop. A lot of them sound like ones that I'd love to read. Thanks for the suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they sound intriguing to you as well. If you read them, be sure to let me know what you think.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jenni!
A number of these look really good. And a sequel to Book Woman? Sign me up!
ReplyDeleteRight? I'm excited. Sequels can be disappointing, so I'm hoping this one is as good as the first book. We'll see.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
Happy Tuesday, Susan! I am also looking forward to Jocelyn Green's book, I have to read the second one first though.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both the first and second, so I'm definitely looking forward to the third. I'm also interested in Green's Heroines Behind the Lines series.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
I'm excited for the Book Woman sequel too. I hadn't heard of it until a couple of days ago but immediately added it to my Goodreads TBR.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed BOOK WOMAN, so I have high hopes for the sequel. Hopefully, it won't let me down!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Suzanne!
I love your list! I'm very curious about The Woman in the Library and Breathless😁
ReplyDeleteSame! I hope they're both as good as they sound :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tammy!
Oh, didn't know about this Kelley Armstrong! Must add this to the list as well. Great list here and thanks for visiting my TTT! :)
ReplyDeleteI just learned about the Armstrong one yesterday. I haven't read any of her supernatural books, but I really like her mysteries, so I'm excited for this one.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Rachel!
I have The Woman in the Library, I was very tempted by The Book Woman’s Daughter and The Tobacco Wives.
ReplyDeleteMy request for an e-ARC of THE WOMAN IN THE LIBRARY is pending over at NetGalley. I've got copies of the other two. Now, I just need to actually read them all!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Shelleyrae!
Oooh, I had heard about At the End of Everything before, but could not remember the title! Added it to my Goodreads immediately :D
ReplyDeleteI like books about pandemics (they're a lot more fun to read about than live through), so it sounds like a good read to me. We'll see.
DeleteThanks for popping in, Regitze!
A Rip Through Time looks interesting. Love Kelley Armstrong. Great list! :)
ReplyDeleteTwo comments from you - it's my lucky day :)
DeleteThanks for coming by, Rachel!
You're almost as bad as Lark for making me want books I don't need! LOL So many here that I want to look into, Drawn by the Current, The Silent Unseen, A Rip Through Time. I think this book buying disease is contagious!
ReplyDeleteLOL. I'm going to take that as a compliment, Cath! Lark is bad for my TBR list, too :) That's why I love her blog so much :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting!
The Tobacco Wife sounds interesting to me. I hope you enjoy all of these!
ReplyDeleteI started reading it the other day on my phone because I forgot to bring my book along with me somewhere (#rookiemistake) and so far, so good. I think it's going to be a very good read.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
I totally understand you, Susan. Who can resist a new book? I know I can't. LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my TTT this week.
Certainly not me! My head is SOOOO easily turned :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
Always a pleasure.
DeleteA Rip Through Time sounds so good. I usually enjoy stories with a time travel element.
ReplyDeleteI do and don't. It depends. I've liked enough of Armstrong's books, though, to trust that this one is going to work for me!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!
I knew I shouldn't read this post only days after resolving to concentrate on older books in 2022. And then the covers started jumping out at me...books about book people, books about libraries, books about time travel...what a temptation.
ReplyDeleteLOL. Right? It's hard to resist all the shiny new books that come out every year! I need publishing to grind to a complete halt for a few years so I can catch up a little.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
Can I just start by saying your blog is so freaking cute!?
ReplyDeleteI want to try At The End of Everything, I loved This is Where it Ends but the other book she published last year was... well I DNF'd it pretty quickly.
I haven't heard of any of the others though.
Ash @ Essentially Ash
Thanks so much! I had BBB redesigned a few months ago and it has been a really fun change. I'm glad you like it :)
DeleteI've read THIS IS WHERE IT ENDS, but it was a looonggg time ago and I don't remember anything about it. A THE END OF EVERYTHING sounds like my kind of read. We'll see.
Thanks for stopping in, Ash!
OMG The Woman in the Library sounds irresistible...
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it? I love the simple premise because they're just SO much that can be done with it!
DeleteThanks for popping by, Emma!
A couple of good looking books there. I want to try and make a dent in my TBR so we shall see!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT
Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog
The only way I'm going to make a dent in my TBR is if I stop adding books to it. Somehow, I just don't think that's going to happen...LOL.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Emily!
Both Breathless and the Unquiet Dead are on my TBR list. And I will definitely be checking out the new Kelley Armstrong series, too. :D Happy TTT!
ReplyDeleteI hope we both enjoy these. I'm especially excited for BREATHLESS. I always like thrillers that are set in extreme places/climates—I know you do, too!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
I enjoy a lot of Kelley Armstrong's work, so I'm also curious about A Rip Through Time.
ReplyDeleteBut also! Cheddar Off Dead is a great title! I hadn't heard of that one before, but it's one of the better cozy mystery titles I've heard.
Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier!
Ha ha. It's an AWESOME cozy title. They always make me smile, but you're right - some of them are more clever than others.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
I wondered if The Tobacco Wives was set in NC as soon as I saw the title. Do I know my state or what? :-) My grandfather and uncles farmed a small crop of tobacco up until I was about 9 or 10 years old. It was everywhere when I was young! Now it's rare to see a field. Not that I'm complaining!
ReplyDeleteCheddar Off Dead might have me eating everything in sight. I love me some cheese!
You do know your home state! I've never seen a tobacco field before and, honestly, I don't know that I've ever read a book about Big Tobacco. This should be an interesting read for lots of reasons.
DeleteCheese...yum! I don't have a very sophisticated cheese palette, but I do love my cheese.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jen!
I really like Kelly Armstrong's work, whether it's Urban Fantasy, thrillers or her latest time travel series. Looking forward to A Rip through Time!
ReplyDelete~Lex (lexlingua.co)
UF isn't my genre, so I haven't read Armstrong's most well-known novels. Her thrillers are excellent, though. A RIP THROUGH TIME sounds like a blend of the two, so I'm interested to see what I think. I hope we both enjoy it!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Lex!
I haven't read any Marieke Nijkamp yet, but At The End of Everything does once again sound so intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI think so, too. Despite everything we've all gone through in the last couple years, I still enjoy a good pandemic novel. I don't know why, I just do...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lindsey!
The Tobacco Wives sounds so good!
ReplyDeleteI think it's going to be a really good one. I hope so!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carrie!
Great list Susan! I want to read The Book Woman's Daughter
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to enter that world again. I hope the sequel is as good as the first book.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Wendy!
I suffer from FOMO and have an eye for the new and shiny, too! I have an ARC of Book Woman's Daughter and I'm eager to dive it!!! Happy Reading Susan!
ReplyDeleteI really don't have FOMO in relation to anything but books! Ha ha.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carol!
Breathless looks quite good. I enjoy being snug indoors and reading about adventures in deep snow and mountainous places in winter. Have a good reading week!
ReplyDeleteHa! Same. I definitely don't want to be the one trying to survive in the cold, vicious weather. Those situations are way more fun to read about than experience :)
DeleteThanks for popping in, Harvee!
