Top Ten Tuesday: (More) Favorite Quotes About Books and Reading
2:21 PM
I don't know about you, but I love me a good quote. Funny? Inspiring? Beautifully crafted? Astute? I'll take them all. When I come across passages I love in a book I'm reading, I usually just sigh over their awesomeness rather than actually writing them down because I'm just lazy like that. So, when it comes to TTT topics like today's—Top Ten Book Quotes That Fit X Theme—I have to rely a lot on Google. The ones I do tend to write down have to do with books and reading, because, books. What more do I need to say? Naturally, then, I decided to feature those today. Oh, and apparently, I really like book quotes because I posted a very similar TTT list to this one back in September.
If you want to join in the TTT fun, click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl for all the details.
Top Ten Book Quotes About Books and Reading
"After my bedroom, this [the library] was my favorite place in the world. It was carpeted, and had heavy bookcases and ticking clocks and velvet chairs, just like someone's living room. It smelled of unturned pages and unseen adventures, and on every shelf were people I had yet to meet, and places I had yet to visit. Each time, I lost myself in the corridors of books and the polished, wooden rooms, deciding which journey to go on next."
---from The Trouble With Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
"One of my strongest held beliefs is that no one should ever finish a book that they're not enjoying, no matter how popular or well reviewed the book is. Believe me, nobody is going to get any points in heaven by slogging their way through a book they aren't enjoying but think they ought to read."
---from Book Lust by Nancy Pearl
"Storytelling was the most honored of all talents, for it benefitted everyone."
---from The Host by Stephenie Meyer
"When in doubt, go to the library."
"They had only ever discussed books but what, in this life, is more personal than books?"
---from The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
"...bookshops are magic, and books are the road maps by which misfits find each other."
---from The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap by Wendy Welch
"Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing."
---from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
"Take some books and read; that's an immense help; and books are always good company if you have the right sort."
---from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid."
---from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
"Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."
---from Coraline by Neil Gaiman
There you go, ten quotes about books and reading that I happen to love. Which is your favorite? What other quotes do you adore that fit this topic? I'd love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

I just read Northanger Abbey for the first time, and I LOVED that quote. Great post!
ReplyDeleteIt's hilarious, isn't it? And so true! I haven't read NORTHANGER ABBEY, but I might have to now just to encounter that quote in the wild :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
I hope you enjoy it if you do!
DeleteI think it's great that we both did the same theme yet still only had one quote in common. It's almost as though writers like writing about books!
ReplyDeleteRight? There are SOOOO many great quotes out there about books and reading. I love finding new ones!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Claire!
Quotes about reading are always so spot on!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! They're always so relatable.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
I love that quote from Book Lust! it's so true, too.
ReplyDeleteMy post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-lgbt-book-quotes/
Isn't it, though? I stopped forcing myself to read books I didn't like years ago. Who has time for that when there are so many good ones out there waiting for us?
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
These are all great, but I love the one from Book Lust. I have tried to follow that advice lately.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm over forcing myself to read books I don't like just because I think I SHOULD read them. I ain't got time for that!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carla!
I hadn't heard of Book Lust by Nancy Pearl before. I'm interested! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday list this week.
ReplyDeleteI read BOOK LUST a long time ago and then kind of forgot about Nancy Pearl. I just looked at her website and she's written several other books, mostly about books and reading. I need to check out more of them.
DeleteThanks for popping in, Lectrice!
The Host!!! I don't see many people talk about that book. I really enjoyed it, even if it had some flaws. haha. Quotes about reading are always so good!!
ReplyDeleteI read THE HOST back when it came out and enjoyed it. It's been so long, though, that I can't even really remember what it was about. I'm getting old - my memory isn't what it used to be!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leslie!
I love quotes about books and reading. They're pretty much the only ones I write down when I come across them as well. The one from To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI used to collect quotes on all kinds of things, but now I'm just too lazy to write them all down. Books and reading ones, however, I collect in a fun book journal. They just make me smile :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Suzanne!
Oh, I love your explanation of the sigh! Whenever I come across a particular section that's written so perfectly ... it really is a sigh moment. I especially love that one from Coraline. Neil Gaiman has written so many brilliant one-liners.
ReplyDeleteI know! Sometimes I have to read and re-read a passage just to savor the beauty of it. I do literally sigh over them, too :)
DeleteHonestly, Gaiman is kind of a hit-and-miss author for me, but I have come across some really brilliant writing and quotes from him. He definitely has a way with words.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Christopher!
6th quote and book spoke to me. i believe i should take this on. thank you for these words!
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually read THE LITTLE BOOKSTORE OF BIG STONE GAP yet, but it's on my TBR. I'll get to it one of these days. I hope we both enjoy it!
DeleteThanks for stopping in!
Love that quote from Book Lust. It's so true. I don't understand when people talk about "forcing" themselves to finish a book. Why in the world would you do that? LOL
ReplyDeleteI definitely have done it in the past with books I feel like I should read and, to be honest, I still do push through when I'm too far into a book to stop even though I want to. I'm fairly good at closing a book if the first few pages aren't grabbing me. It's just when I'm in the middle that I waver over quitting or slogging through.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!
As you know, I post book quotes every Friday, so it's no secret that I love quotes, especially if they are about reading. Great ones, Susan. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.
Same. They're just so relatable for us bookworms! It makes me happy that we're part of this big, beautiful community of book lovers. Definitely my tribe :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
Such a fantastic way to desribe us, a tribe. I gladly belong to the same tribe as you.
DeleteGreat list! I love quotes about books and reading too. Thanks so much for visiting Long and Short Reviews. :)
ReplyDeleteI think all of us bookworms enjoy those kinds of quotes since we can relate to them so well.
DeleteThanks for popping in, Poinsettia!
Love, love AJ Fikry. I usually re-read it during Christmas. I don't know why. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI loved the book when I read it, too. It's been a long time, though, so maybe it's time for a re-read. I can see why you re-read it at Christmas - it's got a cozy, comforting vibe to it.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting!
What a great topic this week...love the quotes and even recognized a few of them. The Harper Lee quote is one of my longtime favorites because so much emotion is packed into those few words.
ReplyDeleteTO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is my favorite book of all time for SO many reasons. That quote is just one of them :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I love the Nancy Pearl one! (I have her books but I usually just skim them since they're non-fiction.) I don't understand why some people force themselves not to DNF, life is too short. Great List!
ReplyDeleteBOOK LUST is the only Pearl book I've read and I remember it being more lists than the type of thing you read from cover-to-cover. I need to check out more of hers.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Sarah!
These sound so good
ReplyDeleteI've read all but two of the books on my list and they were all good reads. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and LITTLE WOMEN are two of my favorite books of all time, so they're often featured in my lists :)
DeleteThanks for coming by!
Love that quote from Book Lust! And, of cours,e the quote from To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favs! :D
ReplyDeleteI love TKAM for so very many reasons!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
Love these quotes! All of them describe my love of reading perfectly :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I love quotes like these - they say what I feel but more eloquently than I ever could!
DeleteThanks for popping in, JadeSky!
A whole post of book quotes. Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI should post more book/reading quotes, just because they're so fun to collect, enjoy, and share :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!
Some great quotes! Especially this one is important: One of my strongest held beliefs is that no one should ever finish a book that they're not enjoying...
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I'm already going to need two lifetimes to read all the books I want to read - I don't need to waste time on those I'm not enjoying. I need to be better about this!
DeleteThanks for popping in!
I always love seeing my appreciation for reading pop up in books themselves. You have some great quotes here (I especially love the ones from To Kill a Mockingbird and Coraline). And don’t worry, I’m exactly the same - I never seem to make note of quotes I love as I’m actually reading which makes posts like this super hard to do when they come around!
ReplyDeleteSomeone suggested taking a picture of quotes you like with your phone, then transferring them to your quote journal later, when you're feeling less lazy. Great idea, except I forget I took the picture. I'm hopeless!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Ashley!
I loved "The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap" so much! Awesome to see a quote from that. I also love the ones from Little Women and HP. My favorite quote on this list has to be the first one, though -- I don't know it, but descriptions of libraries and bookstores are even better than delicious food descriptions at turning me into Drooling Homer Simpson.
