Top Ten Tuesday: A Winter Wonderland of TBR Books

Even though I've lived in the Arizona desert for over 20 years, it's still hard for me—a Pacific Northwest native—to feel like it's Christmastime when the temperature is in the 70s and 80s and people are wearing shorts and t-shirts instead of coats and gloves. It just doesn't feel right! The answer? Travel somewhere that does. A bunch of people I know are in Germany enjoying its famous Christmas markets right now, but I couldn't venture that far. Instead, my husband and I took advantage of some cheap domestic flights and headed back to the Motherland (aka Washington State). After visiting family in the southeastern part of the state, we headed north to check out Leavenworth. If you've read Ellie Alexander's cozy mystery series starring Sloan Krause, you're familiar with the quaint Bavarian-inspired mountain town. It's the quintessential Christmas village at this time of year, decked out with twinkling lights, enthusiastic carolers, old-fashioned sleigh rides, bustling shoppers, and laughing children sledding in the center of town. We enjoyed strolling through its postcard-perfect (albeit slushy) streets and soaking in the festive holiday atmosphere. Wandering through the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum was especially fun since I've collected the charming wooden figures since I first saw the ballet as a child. (We saw lots of bookish nutcrackers, but my husband photographed me with these particular ones so we could show them to my sister, who's a huge Potterhead. If you look closely, you'll spy other literary characters besides Harry and Hermione.) To continue the spirit of the season, we listened to A Christmas Carol (narrated by the incomparable Tim Curry) as we drove back to Portland, Oregon, to catch our flight home. The trip infused me with some much needed Christmas spirit and, since it was bookish in nature, I thought I'd share it with you!

I'm worn out from the trip, so I'm glad today's Top Ten Tuesday prompt is an easy, straightforward one: Top Ten Books On My Winter 2023-2024 TBR List. The rest of my reading year will be spent on books I need to finish for book awards judging. I'll take a little break from that in January, so I'm going to focus today's list on books I plan to read in the first few weeks of 2024.

These seasonal lists are my favorite, so I hope you'll join in the fun. All you have to do is make your own list and link it up at That Artsy Reader Girl. Easy cheesy.

Top Ten Books On My Winter 2023-2024 TBR List

1. Atomic Habits by James Clear—I re-read this motivational book at the beginning of every year. It's a quick read that teaches sound, easy-to-apply principles. Clear's advice always helps motivate me to actually make and keep New Year's resolutions as well as other short-term goals throughout the year.

2. The Shift: 7 Powerful Mindset Changes for Lasting Weight Loss by Gary Foster—Another self-help book, this one has been recommended multiple times at the Weight Watchers meeting I attend. I've lost 30 pounds so far this year by creating healthy habits, something I will continue in 2024. I'm always looking for motivation, especially when it comes to becoming healthier, so I'm excited to see what this popular guide is all about.

3. Homecoming by Kate Morton—Since I'm always racing to meet my Goodreads goal during the last months of the year, I haven't yet picked up Morton's newest. She's one of my favorite authors so I'm always excited when she publishes a new book. This one is about a journalist who's researching an old mystery and is surprised to learn that she has a personal connection to it.

4. The Underground Library by Jennifer Ryan (available March 12, 2024)—Ryan is another one of my favorite writers. I'm always eager to read her World War II novels and am especially so with this one since it's about books. Yay!

5. Murder on the Christmas Express by Alexandra Benedict—What are the holidays without a little murder, amirite? The generous folks at Poisoned Pen Press just sent me a copy of this mystery. It concerns a sleeper train that derails in the Scottish Highlands, stranding travelers in the snowy middle of nowhere. As passengers start dying one by one, it becomes clear that a ruthless killer is onboard. Can they be stopped before more people die?

6. The Women by Kristin Hannah (available February 6, 2024)—I'm thrilled to have an e-ARC of Hannah's forthcoming novel. It's set in 1965 and tells the story of a woman who joins the Army Nurse Corps on a whim after her brother is shipped out to Vietnam. Not surprisingly, what she sees during the war changes her life irrevocably.

7. Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda (available April 29, 2024)—I also have an e-ARC of this thriller, which concerns a woman who is drawn back to her hometown and its many long-buried secrets when she unexpectedly inherits her childhood home.

8. More Than a Body: Your Body Is An Instrument, Not An Ornament by Lexie and Lindsay Kite—My book club selected this non-fiction offering as our January read. Written by identical twin sisters, both of whom have PhDs in the study of female body image, the book sounds absolutely fascinating.

9. Artifice by Sharon Cameron—I've talked about this YA WWII novel multiple times. It's written by another one of my favorite authors. Santa will likely be sending a copy of this one down my chimney in a couple of weeks. It's uncanny that he always knows exactly what I want. It's almost like we share a brain...

10. My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon—McMahon's creepy novels are usually more suited to Halloween than Christmas, but her latest takes place during the holidays. I've mentioned it before, but here's the synopsis again: When Alison receives word that her estranged mother is dying from cancer and only has weeks to live, she reluctantly takes the older woman into her home. When strange, otherworldly things start happening, Alison begins to wonder who her mother really is and how she can protect her family from the nightmare the dying woman has unleashed on them.

There you go, the first ten books I'm planning to read in 2024. Have you read any of these? What did you think? What's on your TBR list this winter? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on yours.

Happy TTT!

Top Ten Tuesday: A Challenging 2024

Even as I busily try to finish up my 2023 reading for challenges, book awards judging, and reviews (ha ha), I'm already thinking ahead to what I want to read in the new year. One of my favorite ways to add fun and variety to my reading is through reading challenges. I'll do a wrap-up of my reading challenge progress for 2023 in a few weeks, but here's a spoiler alert for you: I have finished all of them (even the one with 109 prompts) except for one. Huzzah! I don't take reading challenges super seriously, but I'm still proud of myself for this accomplishment. Go, me.

Since I've rocked my challenges so hard this year, I'm going to do another dozen in 2024. Since today's Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie, I figure it's the perfect time to tell you all about them. First, though, click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl and give our TTT host, Jana, some love.

Top Ten (Okay, Twelve) Reading Challenges I'm Going to Tackle in 2024

Update: I totally forgot about the Goodreads Reading Challenge. I do this one every year and my goal is always 200 books. I've already surpassed it for this year, but I'm still going to keep the goal of 200 for 2024.

1. Bookish Books Reading Challenge (hosted by Yours Truly)—This is a no-brainer since I'm the host! It's a fun, laidback challenge that focuses on reading books about books. Join me, won't you? I'm going for the "Living at the Library" level, which requires reading 30+ bookish books. I've read 33 so far in 2023, so it shouldn't be a problem to reach that goal again next year.

2. Literary Escapes Reading Challenge (hosted by Dollycas @Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book)—I do this one every year. You "travel" to each of the 50 states in the U.S., plus Washington, D.C., by reading a book that is set there. You also get bonus points for each country you "visit" in your reading.

3. POPSUGAR Reading Challenge—This annual challenge can be tough. In fact, this is the first year I've completed all the prompts. We'll see if I have continued success with the 2024 version.

4. The 52 Club's Reading Challenge—Prompt challenges are my favorite kind, so I love this yearly challenge. It has 52 (natch) reading prompts to complete.

5. Craving for Cozies Reading Challenge (hosted by Dollycas @Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book)—This is the only one of my reading challenges that I haven't yet completed for 2023. I'm close, but it's highly unlikely that I'll get there by December 31. Oh well, I'll try again next year! In this one, you read cozy mysteries. I'll be joining at the Peckish level, which requires reading 1-25 cozies. I should be able to handle that.

6. Booklist Queen Reading Challenge—Another prompt-based challenge, this is one I have fun with every year. This one also has 52 prompts.

7. Historical Fiction Reading Challenge (hosted by Marg @The Intrepid Reader and Baker)—This one really isn't a challenge since I already read a ton of historical novels, but it's still fun to link up with other hist-fic lovers. I signed up at the Ancient History level (25 books) this year; I think I'll go for broke and do the Prehistoric level (50+ books) in 2024.

8. Medical Examiner Mystery Reading Challenge (hosted by Rick Mills)—Even though it's a little macabre, I enjoy doing this challenge every year. You read mystery novels and count up the dead bodies you find in their pages. I'm in 12th place at the moment. We'll see how many more toe tags I can tie before the year ends!

9. Mystery Marathon Reading Challenge (hosted by Rick Mills)—This is a new challenge that Rick came up with for 2024. Thankfully, it involves no actual physical exertion! You are "running" a reading marathon where each mystery you read counts as one mile and the number of pages in the book equals the number of steps taken to reach that mile. When you hit 26.2 miles, you're at the finish line. I read a ton of mysteries every year, so this one's another no-brainer.

10. 13 Moons Reading Challenge (hosted by Read N Buried)—I've never done this one before, but it's (yet) another prompt-based challenge. There are 13 prompts in each of 13 categories. You can join at different levels that require completing a certain amount of categories or you can go for the "Total Lunar Eclipse" level and do all the prompts, which is what I'm planning to do.

11. Build Your Library Reading Challenge—I enjoyed doing this challenge in 2023 even though its theme (nature) was a little outside of my reading interests. This year's theme is Reading Through History, which is much more to my liking. The challenge consists of 40 prompts, all of which have something to do with history (at least loosely).

12. Don't Get Fined! A Library Adventure Game (Goodreads)—Thanks to Bev, I just got introduced to Goodreads reading challenges. I didn't realize these were a thing, so I went down a very long, dark rabbit hole checking them out. I resisted the urge to join ALL the challenges and just went with this one since it sounded fun. It's a perpetual challenge with no end date—you're done when you reach the end of the "gameboard." You roll a dice after each book you read, which determines which space you land on, which then gives you a reading "task," which tells you what kind of book to read next. I started the game a few days ago and am currently on my second task.

As you may or may not know, I started a blog a few years ago where I kept a running list of reading challenges. I did it because the one I usually relied on went dark and I didn't know about any others. I've since discovered three blogs with this same goal. There's no reason to duplicate other people's efforts, so I will be deleting mine. If you're looking for reading challenges to join, look no further:

What are your thoughts on reading challenges? Do you love them? Hate them? Which are your favorites? Which ones are you planning to join in 2024? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

Announcing the Bookish Books Reading Challenge 2024

Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make the first year of my Bookish Books Reading Challenge a rousing success! It's been fun to talk bookish books with you throughout 2023. I definitely want to keep the party going in 2024. Hopefully, you do too! You can officially join the challenge by using the linky at the bottom of this post.

Here's everything you need to know:

This is a laidback challenge designed to encourage the reading of all those bookish books that are still lingering on our shelves and TBR lists. Any book counts as long as one of its main themes is books (reading them, writing them, hoarding them, stealing them, eating them, burning them, decorating with them, organizing them, sniffing them, selling them, etc.). Any book that is essentially bookish in nature counts. All formats are acceptable. Since this challenge isn't about pages read, length doesn't matter either. Picture books are totally fine.

Because it wouldn't be a challenge without a *little* bit of pushing, I created some levels just to make it more fun:

Toe in the Door: 1-10 books read
Picking and Perusing: 11-20 books read
Lost in the Stacks: 21-30 books read
Living in the Library: 30+ books read

I'm an overachiever, so I'm aiming for the Living in the Library level again this year.

Reviews aren't required, but they're always nice. I, for one, am perpetually on the lookout for more bookish books and reviews help me to know which are worth the read. So, I'll put a monthly linky up so we can all see what we're reading for the challenge.

You don't have to have a blog to participate, but it's helpful to keep a list of books read for the challenge somewhere. Mine will be listed under the "Reading Challenges" tab here at BBB.

If you need ideas for the challenge, I've started a Goodreads list to help. I'm sure there are others there with a similar theme.
The challenge will run from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024. You can sign up any time during the year, starting now.

Challenges are more fun with friends, so please join me. Feel free to grab the challenge button, post about the challenge on your blog, and help me spread the word.

Please use the linky below to sign up for the challenge. Create a post on your blog or on social media announcing that you are participating in the challenge, then use that link to sign up using the linky widget below:

The Bookish Books Reading Challenge: December Book Ideas and Link Up for Reviews

I'm not sure how this happened exactly, but somehow we're in the last month of 2023. Crazy! Things around here start moving in fast forward once Halloween is over, making for a lot of holiday busyness. I hope you're surviving your end-of-the-year-chaos and even finding some time to relax with a good bookish book.

My November reading was focused on books I needed to read in order to finish out my 2023 reading challenges. Surprisingly, that included these six bookish books, which I've listed in order of most liked to least liked (links will take you to my reviews on Goodreads, since I've been a complete slacker this year about posting them on my actual book blog):

For December, I'm planning to check off more of the middle-grade nominees for the Cybils Awards. None of the ones I'm planning to read are bookish as far as I can tell. For my November book club meeting (which got pushed back to next week), though, I will be reading Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan. I was at an event tonight with many of the book club members and their reports on the novel are mixed. Most liked the cozy read overall, even though it's a bit slow, apparently. We'll see what I think when I get to it this weekend.

What about you? What bookish books did you read in November? What's on your docket for December?

If you've had fun doing this fun, laidback challenge this year, please join me for the 2024 Bookish Books Reading Challenge. I'll make an official post about it sometime in the next couple weeks.

For those of you who are participating in the 2023 Bookish Books Reading Challenge, here's the Mr. Linky to use for linking up December reviews. If you've not yet signed up for the challenge, what are you waiting for? Join us in this low-key challenge that celebrates a genre we all love: books about books. It will be fun, I promise! (Note: I copy and paste this paragraph into these posts every month, but you CAN still join the challenge even though the year is almost over. Just link up your reviews of bookish books. Easy peasy.)
