Top Ten Tuesday: Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
1:55 PM
Happy Tuesday! I don't remember submitting today's Top Ten Tuesday prompt, but apparently I did. I'm turning 50 this year and my memory is...not great. Anyway, the topic du jour is: Top Ten Ways in Which My Blogging/Review Style Has Changed Over the Years. One of my favorite things about blog hopping is seeing how other bloggers do their thing. It's always interesting to compare/contrast others' approaches with my own, so I'm excited to read everyone's lists today.
As always, TTT is hosted by the lovely Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl.
Top Ten Ways in Which My Blogging/Review Style Has Changed Over the Years
I've been talking about books here at BBB since 2006, almost TWENTY years ago. Crazy! Although I live in the same house that I did back then (after living elsewhere for fourteen years), a lot has changed in almost two decades. When I started my blog, I was a 30-year-old stay-at-home mom looking for a creative outlet. I had three small children, little free time, and a lot of stress. Nineteen years later, I have four children (we adopted our youngest in 2008), a daughter-in-law, a grandbaby, abundant time to myself, and a life that is generally smooth and peaceful.
As my life circumstances have changed over the years, so has my reading and blogging. Here's how:
1. Read, Review, Repeat—Back in the day, I reviewed every book I read on my blog. It didn't matter whether it came from a publisher, the library, or my own shelves, I took the time to write a detailed, thoughtful review. Since I read a whole lot faster than I review, this quickly became a huge source of stress and pressure for me. Eventually, I realized that I was creating my own issue by demanding too much of myself. It was only a handful of years ago that I finally gave myself permission to review only what I wanted to review and to do it on my own timeline. So liberating! Since then, the number of reviews posted on my blog has massively dwindled, but I'm a much happier blogger.
2. Goodreads for the Win—It took me some time to get into this iconic book site, but now I'm totally addicted! I keep multiple TBR lists there, follow friends, participate in the yearly Goodreads challenge, and more. I'm on the site almost every day. If you don't follow me there yet, you definitely should.
Even though I don't review everything I read on my blog, I do review everything I read on Goodreads. As soon as I can after I finish a book, I record my initial thoughts on GR simply because I like having a record of what I've read and what I thought about it. If I end up writing a more in-depth review on my blog, I can refer to my GR review and those fresher thoughts. Even though my GR reviews are generally rougher than my blog reviews, I still post them on NetGalley and Edelweiss when they're referring to ARCs.
3. Faster, more efficient reading—As I mentioned, I had three little kids when I started this blog. I had to sneak in my reading and blogging during naptime and in the early morning before they woke up. I'm not sure how many books I read in a year back then (probably not many), but now I usually get about 200. Since I don't have small children, I don't have a job, I don't watch tv, and I don't have many other hobbies, I have all the time in the world to read. When I'm driving (frequently), doing housework (ALL the dang time), or exercising (not enough of the time), I listen to audiobooks to pass the time and up my book count.
4. More succinct reviews—In the early days of BBB, my aunt told me she didn't like my reviews because I gave too much of the book's plot away. Fair point. My writing has always been wordy and that probably won't ever change, but I do think I've gotten better at penning reviews that are more succinct and spoiler-free. Writing quick reviews on Goodreads has definitely helped me with this.
5. Picky, picky, picky!—When I first started my blog, I was so excited that publicists were offering me free reads that I eagerly accepted every book that was offered to me. It didn't take long for me to feel totally overwhelmed and pressured to read them all, even if they were not at all my cup of tea. I have become much more selective over time. These days, I probably accept less than half of the books I'm offered.
6. More balance, less snark—As a baby blogger, I earned a fierce reputation as the Simon Cowell of the book blogging world. If I didn't like a book, I did not hold back! I was riding pretty high on my own wit when I received several hate emails from angry authors and lost a writer friend whose book I didn't love. After some humbling, I started to tone things down. I still believe in writing honest reviews, but I've tried to take a kinder, more balanced, less snarky approach.
7. Bye, bye book tours!—Once upon a time, I was super into participating in blog tours. Back then, it was sometimes the only way to get early copies of hot titles. Greedy little me signed up for so many of them that I had at least one tour stop every week and usually more. Keeping up a hectic schedule like that sucked the fun out of book reviewing, leaving me feeling panicked, stressed, and guilty when I couldn't keep up. Some time ago, I decided to give up blog tours completely. What a relief! Now and then, I'll agree to a tour stop, but they are very, very few and very, very far between.
8. Schedule free me—As a matter of fact, I have stopped doing any kind of scheduled posting. I participate in TTT most weeks, but that's about it. For years, I've been telling authors and publicists that I review only on my own schedule. If I get to their book, I get to it; if I don't, I don't. Judging by the amount of books still coming to my doorstep, most people don't mind my lackadaisical attitude.
On the other hand, having no schedule means I rarely post these days. I don't want my blog to be completely forgotten, so I may have to be a little more disciplined on this one. We'll see.
9. Challenge Me—I've always loved reading challenges. Back in the day, there were tons of them going on in the book blogosphere and lots of them were competitive, offering generous prizes of books, gift cards, and so on. I took them seriously, participating in a bunch every year. Although I still join more of them than I should, I only do them for fun these days. I also host a couple of my own, which I enjoy.
10. Old favorites, been and gone—In almost twenty years of book blogging, I've fallen in love with so many wonderful blogs and bloggers. It's sad when they disappear from the book blogosphere. Over the years, some of those bloggers have died while others have just moved on to other pursuits. Although so many of them have gone away, luckily, there have been many more that have taken their place over the years. I'm so glad that the book blogging world is still going strong.
One thing that hasn't changed since 2006 is that I still love reading and promoting books. Being a part of the book blogosphere for all these years has been such a joy. Thank you for hanging out here with me and for all of your thoughtful comments, delightful book recommendations, wonderful support, and more. You make me feel included and seen, something that can be tough for bookish introverts to find. Even though I'm a senior citizen in the book blogging world, I'm not ready to let it go. That might not ever change!
How long have you been blogging? What changes have you noticed in your reading, reviewing, and blogging habits over the years? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog. I also try to respond to comments left here.
Happy TTT!

P.S.: Don't panic if your comment doesn't show up right away. I have to approve each one before it posts to prevent spam. It's annoying, but it works!

Wow! You have so many years of blogging to celebrate! 🙌 I’m celebrating 8 this summer. I’m sorry about your hate mail. 👎 Authors need to remember that reviews are for other readers. I feel sad when someone gives my 5 star read 1 star…..so I can imagine how negative reviews hurt their feelings. But still, they need to avoid engaging. I know there’s been a couple of authors who have a bad rep for attacking reviewers. I’m glad we’ve connected in the happy bookish blogosphere! #readingpeoplearethebestpeople ~Carol @ ReadingLadies
ReplyDeleteThankfully, I've only received a couple of hate emails from authors. I was really surprised by one of them because all I said was that it wasn't the author's best book (it REALLY wasn't) and I didn't think that statement was at all mean, but she did apparently. She actually wrote me several nasty emails, after which I blocked her in order to just stop the whole thing. It was not a fun experience, but it taught me some things!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carol!
LOL, I cannot see you as the Simon Cowell book blogger!! It made me laugh out loud. I need a more relaxed approach to my blogging. Love stopping by, have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThe most common adjective I've heard used to describe me from my IRL friends and family is "nice" because I really am! It was weird when my inner Simon Cowell came out. I hide it better now. LOL
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
I use Goodreads, too, but my reviews on it are so short as to not really be a review. I can't make myself settle long enough to even write a reviewish comment there. Ha!
ReplyDeleteHa ha. My GR reviews are much shorter than my blog reviews, which has actually been very liberating. They're much easier to write, so I do them more reliably there than on my blog. Whatever works, right?
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Anne!
I have had my present blog for almost then years, but I did have another blog for about a year before that. I remember you commenting once about your snarky reviews, and I found that hard to believe, but I'm glad you eased up on your own, Susan. I am still doing blog tours and every year say I am going to cut back, but I haven't yet. Some good observations here.
ReplyDeleteRight? My snark really came out in some of those early reviews. It was a hidden aspect of my personality that surprised even me! Ha ha.
DeleteI enjoyed doing blog tours for a long time, but I got SO overwhelmed with them. I could have just cut down on how many I was doing, but I'm sort of an all-or-nothing kind of person, so I just quit cold turkey. It's been a good thing for me. I get how hard it is to resist them!
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carla!
Hi! To think 19 years ago you were a young mom and 18 years ago I was 45 getting my divorce and blogging became a lifeline for me. I have a ton of time to read, and I even went to school to get my editing degree, but life happened and I’ve been caring for my parents and now just my mom. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteLife moves fast and loves to throw us curveballs, doesn't it? I'm in the "sandwich" era - I still have kids at home but I also have elderly parents who are going to need care soon. Blogging has definitely given me an outlet and a lifeline for me throughout it all. I'm glad it's been the same for you :)
DeleteThanks for popping in, Andi!
A great read with wonderful insights from an experienced blogger! It's a huge accomplishment to have stuck to anything, let alone reviewing (which is so time consuming) for so long! I really enjoyed reading your takes on what you choose to review versus what you don't, as that's something I struggle finding a balance with myself.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'm a little surprised that I'm still blogging after 19 years. I've thought about retiring over the years, but I'm still enjoying it enough to keep on, just maybe not to the extent that I used to. Balance is definitely a hard thing to find.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Kate!
Love your list, Susan! Thank you for coming up with this week’s prompt. I love Goodreads! Happy Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteSame! I can't get enough of Goodreads. It helps keep my reading organized. It's fun to have friends like you on there too :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Stephanie!
I've seen a lot now people mention having cut down on reviews over the years, and that's something I've done too. It's nice to balance the with reading purely for enjoyment without having to express/justify your thoughts lol
ReplyDeleteAgreed! I never want reading to feel like a chore. That sucks all the enjoyment out of it for me.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Louise!
Possibly the best opening line to a blog! So funny that you didn't remember submitting it. It was a great prompt, so thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't even heard of book tours until your post, I'm learning something new everyday as a newbie book blogger!
I replied to your comment on my own blog asking how long you've been doing this, but I see now it's 20 years!! That's incredible.
And I'm definitely going to read through your old blog posts as I just have to see the Simon Cowell you 😂
Ha ha. I'm not sure I would have even answered the prompt this week if I hadn't been the one who submitted it! LOL. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's posts, though. It's always fascinating to me to see how other bloggers' habits compare/contrast with my own. I learn so much from these kinds of posts.
DeleteBlog tours used to be a huge thing in the book blogosphere. I know a lot of bloggers still do them, but I don't see nearly as many of them these days. If you're interested, I'm sure you can find lots of blog tour companies through Google and other blogs. The one I most enjoyed working with back in the day is tlcbooktours.com and they are still in business.
Thanks for popping in, Em!
Wow! Almost 20 years already! That's incredible! I've been blogging since 2009 so just 3 years after you and I still have fun with it as well! I've seen many changes over the years, watched many friends "retire" but I still chug at it because it's something I like doing. I still find that I like to give the shortest of book summaries, usually only giving a little more umph than what's in the synopsis because as a reader looking for new reads, that's what I look for in reviews. ESPECIALLY when the plot rarely gets mentioned. There have been books where the synopsis was so vague I was like, what genre is the book apart of?! Luckily those were just in the early days, but I've found I still like to include this in my reviews because it's what I want to see in reviews. I've always gone by "write the kind of review you'd want to read!"
ReplyDeleteSadly I've also seemed to have gotten off publishers lists. I truly blame Covid for that because the review books have been few and far between these years. I still request on Edelweiss and Netgalley but have been getting a slew of rejections recently so that's even putting me down after I highlighted all my credentials in my request.
Here's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Same. I like to read reviews that are informative and entertaining without giving too much away. When I write reviews on my blog, I like to do a plot summary as well, but when I write my own, they tend to be overly long. I need to learn how to do short ones.
DeleteInteresting that you've gotten off publishers' list. I'm not on as many as I used to be, but I'm still on quite a few, some of which I've been on for almost as long as I've been blogging! My NG review ratio is abysmal, so I don't get as many approvals as I used to. EW doesn't seem to care as much. Ha ha.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jessica!
Two decades of blogging!!! WOW! *bows down* I want to go and read your old Simon Cowell reviews. Some of the older WLABB ones would fit that, too (not written by me). I feel so many of these points but really love that you are still a Goodreads person. I love GR and it gets a bad rap from too many. Still the best place for bookish stuff, if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI tried Storygraph because there are a lot of things I like about it, but the learning curve was too steep for me, and its format just doesn't work as well for me as GR's does. It's fun to have friends like you on there too :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I love that you’ve been blogging for so long!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad when blogs go quiet. I wish their authors well.
Same! I understand, though, that blogging is a time-consuming hobby. Sometimes, people need to move on to make room for life changes, other hobbies, etc. Still makes me sad, though.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
Loved this post, Susan! I remember you back in those early years. My current blog is 10 years old, but I had another one before that. I agree with many of your changes and have the same challenges myself. I've finally gotten to the point where I blog as I like, etc. I do rarely write negative things about books, but I think part of that is realizing over and over that we all like different things. And that's OK. What might work for me might not work for other readers. Blogs and especially attending a couple of book groups for 18 years has helped with hearing other perspectives. I miss several bloggers, but like you, I'm glad that some have stuck around. I'll be here as long as I can. Big hugs to you - one day we might even meet in person. Take care!
ReplyDeleteI hear you! I still include negative things about the books I read, I just try to be more balanced and less snarky about it. Ha ha.
DeleteI hope we can meet in person someday. Next time you're in Arizona with some free time on your hands, let me know!
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!
I have been blogging for over twenty years also, just not in the books space. I would use Xanga for blogging, like a journal, when I was in high school (1998). Then I made a blog about becoming a new young mom, which allowed me to get to know other young moms. I have been using Blogger/Wordpress for a few years for blogging about books, as my children have gotten older and I had more time on my hands.
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of Xanga! You're younger than me (I graduated high school in 1994); I didn't start using the Internet for anything until I was in college. When I was a young mom, mom blogs were really big, and it was fun to share experiences with friends and strangers. The book blogosphere has always been my favorite, though. I feel a great sense of belonging here :)
DeleteThanks for popping in, Library Girl!
Book Tours! Gosh I remember thinking how they'd grow my blog LOL LOL LOL Good post--and thanks for reading mine!
ReplyDeleteRight? And I did get some traffic from them, just not enough to justify the stress I felt from participating in them.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lisa!
I very rarely do book tours anymore! I will only do them if it's something I really want to read or already have an e-arc for. The schedule is too much and they have so many rules now. I never gain much traction so it doesn't feel like it's that beneficial with the stress. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the rules have gotten a lot stricter for blog tours over the years and, yes, that would just make them MORE stressful! It was really good for me to stop doing them when I did. Funny enough, I did sign up for one just the other day because the book sounds really good and I can't get it otherwise. Ha ha. Old habits die hard.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leslie!
I've been blogging for over 20 years now (I started with Blogger in 2004, though I did nuke my first blog and start over) and lots has changed. One big one is the amount of personal stuff I write about has decreased dramatically.
ReplyDeleteI agree about your last point too, though. I've seen a lot of blogs go silent, for a lot of reasons, and it makes me sad. On the other hand, I do have one or two long-term blog friends that I'm still in touch with from my early days of blogging, and I cherish that history even though we've never met in person.
I've never shared a lot of personal stuff on my blog and I share even less now. I'm pretty private in general, so that tracks.
DeleteI have some of those long-term blog friends, too, and it's great to have some of the old guard still around. It's funny how close you can sometimes feel to people you know but have never met, isn't it?
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
Ah, yes! All the blog tour days. I used to join quite a few of those. I also used to accept all the things. That kind of gradually fell away and now I rarely review or request "just anything," and overall, I think this is really good! :) Congrats on almost twenty years! That's awesome. :) Thanks so much for visiting my list this week.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I still request/accept more than I should, but at least I only do so when I'm reasonably sure they are books I'm going to enjoy. That's helped me feel less overwhelmed and pressured for sure.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Rissi!
20 years is amazing! I started in 2021 so am still reviewing every book and going on Blog Tours. My reviews have got longer, but then the Blog Tours require it (well one had a minimum word count, the rest is my guilt 😂)
ReplyDeleteHopefully we both have many more blogging years in us - I'm mid 30s - 35 specifically - and have a 6 year old and a 22 month old!
Have a great rest of the week!
Different things work for different bloggers. I've just gotten old and lazy! Ha ha.
DeleteYou're at about the same stage in life I was when I started my blog. It was a great creative outlet for me back then, even if the kids sometimes made it difficult for me to post much :)
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Emily!
Initially I loved to blog for the free books I was sent. Now? I do not ask for them, and I do not review anything sent to me I did not request. I read what I want and review what I want!
ReplyDeleteSounds perfect! Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deb!
DeleteI don't do very many book tours anymore either. I have too many books to read as it is. My TTT: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2025/05/13/top-ten-tuesday-ways-in-which-my-blogging-habits-have-changed/
ReplyDeleteRight? The last thing on Earth I need is more books, and yet I can't seem to stop accumulating them. I have no self-control! Ha ha.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Bonnie!
You suggested a very fun topic this week :) Thanks for helping me take a trip down memory lane with my blog! 20 years is incredible and I hope that I'll be able to say that one day. I've got a while to go but already feel like a 'veteran' considering how many blogger friends have disappeared over the years and how many new blogs keep cropping up (too many to keep up with)! I can relate to so many of these changes that you mentioned, and I for one am thankful for how much I've grown as a reader and blogger over the years. Many lessons were learned! ðŸ¤
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the topic! It's been so interesting for me to read everyone's responses to it. I'm also glad for what I've learned over my years of blogging. I'm definitely a better blogger because of those lessons.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Dini!
Great post! And a bit lengthy haha, but your blog has undergone multiple changes over the years.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT (I'm laaaaaate): https://laurieisreading.com/2025/05/17/top-ten-tuesday-ways-in-which-my-bloggin-reviewing-style-has-changed-over-time/
ALL my posts are lengthy, it seems! Ha ha.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Laurie!
I've been blogging for about 15 years now. I started initially because I was leading an international book club where the members moved around all the time. One of them asked me to start a blog when she left. So, I have more or less had an online book club since then. I have not changed much. At the beginning, I wrote reviews about every book I ever read. Now, I don't have that many books to review since I've gone through them all but participate in challenges like Top Ten Tuesday or Classic Club etc. But I still do the same kind of reviews.
ReplyDeleteFifteen years is a long time! If your review style hasn't changed much, that must mean it's the one that fits you best. That's great that you know yourself so well :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
Thanks, Susan. I think it helped that I ran a book club for about ten years before I started blogging and I just imagine us all sitting together and discussing our latest read.
DeleteLoved reading your list, Susan. I've been blogging since 2007. Funny that we were both at the same time in our lives when we picked up blogging. I think I recall a few of your snarky reviews. :) I've always enjoyed checking in here when I can, and one day I might follow your lead and write off book tours entirely. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWe both started in the golden days of blogging. All my friends had mommy blogs back then. It was a thing! My mommy blog didn't last very long, but my book blog sure has :)
DeleteGiving up book tours was absolutely the right thing for me to do, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing for you or anyone else. It brought me a lot of relief and peace, though.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cheryl!
Wow! That is some serious time in the book blogging world! I'm at 12 years I think and that feels pretty long as it is. I haven't changed that much though I'm much pickier about the books I take to review and the sources they come from. It is sad how many people have disappeared from the blogging world. There are a number of people I still wonder about. Great list!
ReplyDeleteRight? A lot of bloggers just randomly disappeared and I do wonder what happened to them. We all get busy and priorities change, but I miss a lot of those old bloggers.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
