Top Ten Tuesday: Let's Get the Fall Reading Party Started! Or My Fall TBR List, Part One
4:43 PM
It's TTT time and once again we've got a great topic—Top Ten Favorite Character Relationships—that I'm just not feeling. Since next week is all about our Fall TBR lists, I'm going to get that party started early with part one of my list. It's hard to believe, but we only have 110 days left in 2023 (not counting today). That's a little over three months to cram in all the reading I still want to accomplish this year. I've read 141 books so far, so I should have no trouble hitting my yearly goal of 200. I'm also doing well on all of my reading challenges, so I'm hoping to complete them by December 31 as well. To that end, the majority of the books on my Fall TBR are titles that I'm reading for reading challenges.
Before we get to that, though, be sure to click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl and give our Top Ten Tuesday hostess with the mostest, Jana, some love!
Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List (Part One)
1. Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman—This YA novel tells the story of Rory Hendrix, a smart, savvy girl who's desperate to prove she's not the future-less trailer trash everyone thinks she is. Told through a series of social workers' reports, arrest records, diary entries, letters, etc., it's an original coming-of-age story.
Literary Escapes Challenge—Nevada
2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid—When reclusive Evelyn Hugo, an aging Hollywood actress, finally decides to tell her life story to the press, she chooses an obscure reporter named Monique Grant. A shocked Monique listens in fascination as Evelyn reveals her incredible tale, one that—shockingly—intersects with Monique's own.
PopSugar Reading Challenge—A Book About Divorce AND the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge
3. War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi—Set in 2172 Nigeria, this YA novel features two sisters who are determined to fight for their future on a climate-changed, war-ravaged, abandoned-for-space Earth.
The Pick Your Poison Reading Challenge—A Book with a Robot, Cyborg, or AI Character AND the Build Your Library Reading Challenge—A Book About a Futuristic Society
4. Last Call at the Nightingale by Katherine Schellman—The first installment in a historical mystery series, this novel features a Prohibition-era seamstress who's desperate to escape her tedious, poverty-stricken life. She finds freedom and escape at a secret dance hall where anything goes. When she discovers a dead body behind the club, she becomes embroiled in a dangerous murder investigation.
The 52 Club Reading Challenge—Takes Place During the Roaring Twenties AND the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge
5. Sun Storm by Asa Larsson—This is the first book in a Swedish mystery series starring Stockholm lawyer Rebecka Martinsson. Our heroine returns to her hometown in spite of the disgrace she suffered there years before. Only an emergency would take her back and that's exactly what this is: her friend's brother has been viciously murdered. Rebecka will stop at nothing to find his killer.
Pick Your Poison Reading Challenge—A "Noir" Book AND the 52 Club Reading Challenge—Nordic Noir
6. The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer—Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a good Jewish girl. She's also secretly a best-selling author of Christmas romances. She just can't get enough of the Christian holiday with all of its magic and merriment. Hanukkah pales in comparison. When Rachel's editor insists she write a "diverse" holiday story, she turns to an upcoming Hanukkah celebration for inspiration. Working with her archenemy isn't part of the plan. Neither is falling for him...
Booklist Queen Reading Challenge—A Holiday Romance
7. Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese—Tired of trying to find The One so she can start a family, first grade teacher Lauren Bailey decides to pursue international adoption on her own. The adoption agency requires her to remain single for the time being, which becomes a challenge when Lauren finds herself falling for a charming substitute teacher. Does she have to sacrifice one thing her heart desires in order to get another? Or can she figure out a way to get everything she wants?
8. 1984 by George Orwell—This classic sci-fi novel features a young man who works for the Ministry of Truth in a dystopian London. When Julia and O'Brien come into his life unexpectedly, his existence is transformed forever.

She runs, driven to find her five children, all of whom have been sold by the plantation owner. No matter what she finds, she can't rest until she knows what has happened to her beloved offspring.
The 52 Club Reading Challenge—By a Caribbean Author AND the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge
10. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly—This popular non-fiction title tells the fascinating story of the African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America's space program by working as "human computers" at NASA. These brilliant, intrepid women were invaluable assets in spite of all the prejudice they faced because of both their ethnicity and their gender.
Build Your Library Reading Challenge—About BIPOC in Science AND Pick Your Poison Reading Challenge—A Book About Rocket Science
There you go, ten books I'm planning to read this Fall. What are you planning to read in the next few months? If you did today's topic, what are some of your favorite fictional relationships? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

Before I Called You Mine is SO outstanding. I hope you love it!
ReplyDeleteI've heard raves about it from several people. I'm excited to read it!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
Hidden Figures was interesting. I hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteAnd, yeah, this year is passing by so quickly.
Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.
Lydia
I enjoyed the movie version of Hidden Figures, so I'm eager to read the book. I'm sure it will be a fascinating read!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
I hope you enjoy all of these, Susan. I have read Hidden Figures and Matzah Ball and I liked them both. I read 1984 back in high school, so a long time ago and I always thought it was interesting. Of course now that we are way past that date, it seems kind of funny.
ReplyDelete1984 does seem like a VERY long time ago! LOL. Somehow I was never assigned to read anything by Orwell throughout my high school and college experiences, despite earning a degree in English. It's probably time to change that. LOL.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carla!
I hope to read The Matzah Ball this fall/holiday season too! I hope you enjoy all of these when you can read them.
ReplyDeletePam @ Read! Bake! Create!
https://readbakecreate.com/favorite-platonic-relationships-recent-reads
It sounds so cute! I hope we both love it.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Pam!
I need to start thinking about my fall tbr! I need to find some nonfiction titles for nonfiction November and some novellas for November Novellas. I’ve only seen the Hidden Figures movie. ~Carol @ ReadingLadies
ReplyDeleteSame. I really liked the movie, so I assume I'll like the book as well. It's such an interesting story!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carol!
Oh, enjoy 1984, a very important book.
ReplyDeleteAnd Hidden Figures has been on my wishlist for ages, I'm looking forward to seeing what you will say.
My TTT this week.
It's hard to believe that I haven't read 1984 yet or anything by Orwell for that matter. It will be an interesting one for sure! Ditto on HIDDEN FIGURES. I've had the book on my shelf for forever it seems. I need to just read it already.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
True, I thought everyone had to read that in school. LOL. At least those who went there before 1984.
DeleteThanks for always coming by on my page, as well. I enjoy our talks.
Before I Called You Mine is FANTASTIC!!! Move it up on your list! I also wasn't feeling the topic, and wish I had thought to break my TBR up into multiple weeks, LOL! Love this.
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of BEFORE I CALLED YOU MINE on my shelf. Maybe I'll make it my next read! You and Nicole are convincing me to get to it sooner rather than later.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
Nice change up! I somehow managed to *not* have to read 1984 in high school, but now as an adult, I actually want to. And Before I Called You Mine and Last Call at the Nightingale sound interesting! Those might find themselves on my TBR now too. Happy TTT!
ReplyDeleteSame on 1984. My husband says it's super depressing, so I'm not chomping at the bit exactly, but I do want to read it soon.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, A.D.!
War Girls fizzled around its release but I haven't seen anyone talk about it in a long while. I hope you like it. And good luck on all your reading!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of it before I started Googling books with robot/cyborg/AI characters. Sci-fi isn't really my thing, but the story sounds interesting enough that I'm willing to give it a try. I hope I like it too!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Annemieke!
War Girls looks interesting! Near-future SF is usually appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteIt's not my usual genre, but I also think this one sounds interesting. Hopefully, it's a good one!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Stephen!
Only 110 days left in 2023! Yikes! I better get busy.
ReplyDeleteRight? Time is just whooshing by this year! Good luck with meeting your end-of-year goals :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Bonnie!
This looks like a great TBR! I remember being appropriately disturbed by 1984 when I read it a short while ago. It's definitely worth picking up. And I hope you enjoy Hidden Figures! I really enjoyed that one.
ReplyDelete"Appropriately disturbed" - I like that description! LOL. I'll be interested to see what I think of 1984. I'm excited for HIDDEN FIGURES as well. I've seen the movie, but I want to learn more about the women at the center and the important work they did.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
What an interesting "partial" list you've created. Several of the ten are ones I'm curious about, including the couple of first books in new series. I'm reading so many series, most of them far from being caught up on, that I shouldn't add new ones right now...but I can't resist. OK, I'm off to look closer at at least six of these now...
ReplyDeleteI see so many people reading 1984 these days that I'm taking it as a good sign that people's eyes have finally been opened about what is happening all over the world today. That's the first step, I hope, toward correcting some of the governmental overreach that's become so prevalent.
I hear you! I'm in the middle of a bunch of series as well and I have the same problem, I just can't resist starting new ones. It's a curse that we both seem to have :)
DeleteMy husband read 1984 for the first time last year and he's been really encouraging me to read it too so we can discuss it. That should be fun.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I really enjoyed Evelyn Hugo. I will be interested in hearing what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteI used another book for the divorce prompt, so I'm putting off EVELYN HUGO for now. Hopefully, I'll get to it in the near-ish future. Everyone seems to love it.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
Ooh, glad to see Girlchild has jumped up a bit on your TBR. Not really YA, as opposed to adult fiction about a teen, which I realize is a minor distinction, but there's such a different cadence to the writing. Still lovely, though, despite its hard topics. I'm curious what you'll end up thinking of it.
ReplyDeleteAND Before I Called You Mine?? (I think you will really enjoy that one)
I was wondering about that! I saw GIRLCHILD described somewhere as YA. I'll change that in my post so no one gets misled. Thanks for the info. And I'm curious about it too. The story sounds unique and interesting. Same with BEFORE I CALLED YOU MINE.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, RS!
Evelyn Hugo is an absolute favourite of mine!
ReplyDeleteEveryone seems to love it. Hopefully, I will too!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Louise!
Oh nice picks! Those are all totally new to me ones! I hope you enjoy them all this Fall!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my TTT!
I hope so too. They all sound really good to me.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jessica!
I read 1984 not long after 1984. LOL! It was one of the better high school required reading books. I kind of enjoyed all the Orwell books we read. The Matzah Ball was so fun. I had a great time with that one. I started Hidden Figures, and I liked the beginning, but you, non-fiction just isn't my thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of surprised I never had to read any Orwell in high school or college. We'll see what I think of him now! I'm excited for THE MATZAH BALL and I think I'll like HIDDEN FIGURES. I'm fine with non-fiction, as long as it's engaging.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I watched Hidden Figures movie and was so good, i want to read the book too
ReplyDeleteSame! I definitely want to learn more than the movie was able to cover.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Vero!
I have seen The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on so many posts, I really am going to have read it.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy all of these!
Same and everyone seems to love it. I need to give it a go and see what I think. I hope we both enjoy it!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Rebecca!
The Matzah Ball is one of my favorite holiday reads! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that! It sounds really cute. I'm sure I'll love it.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leah!
I somehow missed War Girls but definitely want to give it a shot down the line. Hope you enjoy these!
ReplyDeleteWAR GIRLS is out of my reading comfort zone, but I still think it sounds like a good read. I hope we both enjoy it!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Alicia!
I love the variety in this list. Evelyn Hugo is one of my favorites and I also enjoyed Hidden Figures. 1984 is definitely a timely read!
ReplyDeleteSo many people rave about EVELYN HUGO. It's about time I read it! (Although I ended up using another book for the Divorce prompt, so I don't know when I'll actually read it now. Eventually, I will.)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Suzanne!
Looks like you have some great reading coming up! I'm also finishing up my Popsugar challenge. I've only read Evelyn Hugo from your list and it wasn't one of my favorites of TJR, but I've very much in the minority on that one. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI think you're the first person I've ever "met" who didn't like EVELYN HUGO! I'm interested to see what I'll think of it.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Dedra!
I've got way more than ten books on my list that I want to read before the end of the year! I can't believe it's already September. Where does the time go?
ReplyDeleteHa ha. Me too. I still need to read 57 more to reach my goal of reading 200 books this year. I'm hoping to get to even more than that. We'll see. Good luck with your Fall reading! I don't know how we're almost at the end of September already...seriously, time moves so fast sometimes.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
You have a great variety of books in your fall TBR. I've read a couple of these, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and 1984, which I enjoyed. I hope you get around to reading all of these and enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI try to read a variety of genres, even though my default is always mysteries/thrillers and historical fiction. It's good to shake it up sometimes, though!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sarah!
Great list! I read the most recent book in the Nightingale series and really enjoyed it. I really need to go back and read the first book.
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing good things about the whole series. I'm not someone who can start in the middle of a series, so I'll definitely begin with this one :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a real favorite. The audio version was done so well.
ReplyDeleteOh, good to know! I'm always on the lookout for great audiobooks. I'll have to look for this one.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!
I read Daisy Jones and didn't love it that much but I really think I should try Evelyn Hugo and see if that's a better fit for me.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have avoided DAISY JONES even though it got so much hype because it just doesn't sound like my kind of story. EVELYN HUGO seems more appealing. We'll see what I think when I finally try the very popular TJR!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Bree!
I have read both 1984 (not exactly a light read) and the beautiful Evelyn Hugo..
ReplyDeleteYeah, even though I plan to read 1984 before the year is out, I'm still kind of putting it off in favor of lighter reads. I'll get to it one of these days!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Hena!
I hope you enjoy all of these, Susan! I read Nicole's book back when it released and it was one of my favorites of the year. Hope you find some great winners on this list, AND yay for all the books you've read so far. That's an impressive number. :) Thanks for visiting my website last week.
ReplyDeleteSeveral of you persuaded me to prioritize BEFORE I CALLED YOU MINE. I'm about 1/3 of the way through it and I'm really enjoying the read. As an adoptive mom, I'm always drawn to these kinds of stories. I also love the novel's warm, uplifting vibe. I just hope everything turns out okay for Lauren!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Rissi!
Hey, it's never too early to get the TBR party started! I always love seeing what others are reading. :D 1984 was a good read. You've also reminded me that I still need to read War Girls, too! Hope you enjoy these. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree! I love cozy Fall reading, even though it doesn't feel like Fall at all here in the hot, dry desert. It was 101 degrees yesterday for crying out loud! Better than 120, but still...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sammie!
I hope you are able to read all of these and finish all your challenges for 2023.
ReplyDelete
