Top Ten Tuesday: My Fall TBR List, Part Two
1:00 AM
Even though there's nary a nip in the arid desert air here in Arizona, I'm more than ready for some cozy Fall reading. So ready, in fact, that I already posted part one of this list last week. Naturally, I always have more books in the queue, so I'm going to share ten more today that I'm hoping to read before 2021 comes to an end.
If you want to share your Fall TBR list (please do—I'm always looking for recs!), click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl to find out how to join in the TTT fun.
Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List, Part Two
1. Willodeen by Katherine Applegate—I'm a big Applegate fan, so I've been excited about this one, her newest. It's about a lonely girl who's more comfortable with animals than humans. When a handmade gift brings unexpected magic into her life, it changes everything for her and the precarious world in which she lives. I'm about halfway through this short novel and I'm very much enjoying it. No surprise there.
2. The Haunting Season by various authors—I just got a copy of this collection of spooky short stories by a variety of popular YA writers from the good folks at Pegasus Books. This ghostly volume is going to make for great Halloween reading!
3. God Spare the Girls by Kelsey McKinney—This coming-of-age novel is about two sisters raised in a strict religious community headed up by their father. When they discover that he's been lying to them, it breaks their world apart. The sisters flee, but they will soon have to make a choice between family loyalty and forging their own paths.
4. Across the Desert by Dusti Bowling (available October 12, 2021)—Bowling is a local author whose MG books I've been enjoying lately. I just got approved for an e-ARC of this one, a survival story in which one girl sets out across the treacherous desert to rescue another, whose ultralight airplane has crashed.
5. A View Most Glorious by Regina Scott (available October 5, 2021)—I discovered Scott's American Wonders series this year and am really loving it. This third installment concerns a young woman who longs to do something more with her life than just marry well. When her suffragette group suggests she climb Mt. Rainier to bring attention to their cause, she agrees to the difficult task despite having no mountaineering experience. Will she succeed? What will she gain in the process? With a handsome mountain guide by her side, it's pretty much a given that she'll lose her heart...
6. The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain (available January 11, 2022)—I've got an e-ARC of this novel, the newest from an author I've liked in the past. It's a dual-timeline story about a white woman in 1965 who defies her family's wishes by volunteering to help register Black voters and another woman, in 2010, who learns surprising secrets about the history her new neighborhood, which rumor says is haunted.
7. The Saint of Lost Things by Christopher Castellani—Delaware is one of the last two states I need to complete the 2021 Literary Escapes Challenge. This novel takes place in the state in 1953. It's about the triumphs and sorrows of a vibrant Italian-American community.
8. The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark—I chose this Alex Award-winning novel to fulfill the "Afrofuturist Book" prompt for the 2021 PopSugar Reading Challenge. It takes place in an alternate New Orleans and stars a young woman who earns a coveted place on an airship by giving the captain sensitive information. She soon finds herself on a dangerous mission, where her secret magic might just help her save the world as she knows it.
9. Unmissing by Minka Kent (available February 15, 2022)— This thriller revolves around a couple who is creating a lovely life together. When a late-night knock on their door reveals the husband's first wife, who has been missing and presumed dead for ten years, they're both shocked. The couple takes in the woman, but something about her story just doesn't add up. What really happened to her?
10. The Warsaw Orphan by Kelly Rimmer—I haven't read a lot of World War II stories this year, but this is one I do want to get to soon. It tells the inspired-by-a-true-story tale of a Polish woman who risks everything to help smuggle Jewish children out of the Warsaw ghetto.
There you go, ten more books I'm hoping to read before the year is out. What do you think of my selections? Have you read any of them? What are your most anticipated reads for Fall? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

I haven't read any of these but #1 looks like fun and the cover is cute.
ReplyDelete#8 reminds of another book - Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith - the story is completely different from Black God's Drums. It is about a black girl pilot pretending to be white but there's no magic. For some reason, I think these two could be similar.
Have a lovely day.
WILLODEEN does have a cute cover, doesn't it? I wouldn't mind having a sweet little hummingbear for a pet :)
DeleteI love Sherri L. Smith! FLYGIRL is a great read. It does sound a bit similar to THE BLACK GOD'S DRUMS. It will be interesting to compare/contrast the two.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lissa!
I’m so curious about The Black God’s Drums.
ReplyDeleteMay you get some cooler weather soon! My relatives in Phoenix have been talking about your heat a lot lately. They’re so ready for cooler temperatures.
The heat here really is intense. We were lucky this year and had a bunch of monsoon storms, which cooled things off a tad and gave us a lot of needed moisture. I'll be really happy when it starts to cool off for real. I'm not a fan of the heat!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
Another fantastic list and a number of great choices that I need to go check out like, ASAP. :D
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I'm always happy to add to your TBR pile!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Alex!
Unmissing sounds really good -- and I love that cover!
ReplyDeleteRight? It has a VERY intriguing premise. I'm full of questions I need answered...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
The Last House on the Street sounds interesting. I've been meaning to try something by Chamberlain for quite a while.
ReplyDeleteI've liked her last few books, so I have high hopes for this one. The premise sounds interesting to me.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Tanya!
Well, there you go again with a whole list of books I'm not familiar with...yet. The ones that catch my eye immediately are God Spare the Girls, Unmissing, and The Black God's Drums. Crime fiction and alternate histories...love them.
ReplyDeleteSame! I'm always going to be interested in crime fiction and I usually like alternate histories, so I'm hopeful that these are all going to be winners for me. We'll see.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
The Haunting Season looks like the perfect book to add to a Fall TBR!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it? The stories all feature ghosts of some sort and I love me a good ghost story. Perfect Halloween reading.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Ethan!
Oh, I need to read The Black God's Drums! I meant to read it last year, and didn't get to it. Thank you for reminding me.
ReplyDeleteSame. It's been on my TBR list ever since I heard about it, but I just haven't gotten to it quite yet. Soon, I hope!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Lark!
The Last House on the Street looks so good! I’m putting that on my January list right now.:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by earlier. :)
Anyone else, my list is here: https://fiftytwo.blog/2021/09/21/ttt-ten-books-im-looking-forward-to-this-fall/
Happy TTT!
It does sound good, doesn't it? It doesn't come out for awhile still, but you can request an e-ARC on NetGalley.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lori!
Sounds like an interesting list!
ReplyDeleteI hope it turns out to be a very satisfying list :) We'll see how it goes.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leah!
OMG that cover of Willodeen is so cute!
ReplyDeleteRight? I especially love the cute little hummingbear :)
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Ashley!
I still have to read a book set in Delaware, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of Willodean.
Delaware books are hard to find. North Dakota books are even harder! Those are the two I have left.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Deb!
All of these are unfamiliar to me but now I have lots of books to check out. Especially love the historical fiction ones!
ReplyDeleteI'm always up for good historical fiction!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Stephanie!
It's 97 where I am in SoCal today! I loved Warsaw Orphan but it's a heavy read in places. Happy fall reading and hoping to light fireplaces in our near futures!
ReplyDeleteUgh! It's 102 here right now. I've been over the heat since it began last April. I really was not meant to live in a desert climate!
DeleteI've actually been avoiding WWII books lately because I don't want really heavy reads. So, we'll see if I end up reading THE WARSAW ORPHAN right now or not. I own my copy, so there's no rush.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carol!
I love reading about mountain climbing so the one that appeals to me is A View Most Glorious.
ReplyDeleteI've been finding mountain climbing books really interesting lately, too. Not sure why since I'm not much of a hiker. Something about the adventure of it does appeal to me—at least in books :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!
Just to let you know, I got the first two Regina Scott books for the princely sum of £1.71. How's that for a bargain!
DeleteI have not read any of these. Several of them sound good. Happy reading. My link is here: https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2021/09/top-ten-tuesday-books-on-fall-tbr-list.html
ReplyDeleteGlad I could pique your interest!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
A great list! I hope you enjoy reading them all.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my post earlier: https://readbakecreate.com/autumn-2021-tbr-10-books-i-hope-to-read/
I hope so, too!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Pam!
I'll be heading from my Michigan fall to your Arizona not-so-fall in a couple of weeks to visit my sister. I'll try to bring you some of my cooler weather. But I'll be jealous of your warmth come January, I'm sure.
ReplyDeletePlease, do! I'm dying in all this heat. Ick. We will be loving life in January, though, that's for sure. The weather is perfect then. Safe travels!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Cheri!
Happy Tuesday! The Black God's Drum is such a good read!
ReplyDeleteHere is my my Top Tuesday post:
https://introvertinterruptedcom.wordpress.com/2021/09/21/my-favorite-2021-emmy-outfits-as-books/
I've heard lots of good things about it. I'm hopeful that I'll really enjoy it, even though it's not the kind of thing I usually read.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Adira!
The Black God's Drums sounds really interesting and definitely one I want to check out. I hope you enjoy all these!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I hope we both love it!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Alicia!
The Warsaw Orphan sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI think so, too. I've been kind of avoiding the heaviness of WWII books lately, but I believe I'm ready for this one. We'll see.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Veronica!
I haven't come across any of these but they all look good! I love the look of Willowdeen and The Saint of Lost Things. I'd probably skip the Kelly Rimmer because I haven't had the best luck with her books but I'll be interested to see what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteWILLOWDEEN is a fast read and a cute one. It's not on par with THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN and CRENSHAW, but it's still a sweet, empowering read.
DeleteI've only read one book by Rimmer and I liked it well enough, so I have high hopes for THE WARSAW ORPHAN. We'll see.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
Nice list, for me autumn is time to read historical fiction, also The Black God's Drums sounds great, I had read other books by the author and love it
ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction any time of the year, but I can see why you would enjoy it especially in autumn. Happy Fall reading!
DeleteThanks for stopping in, verogjv!
Ooh Unmissing sounds like one I'd like.
ReplyDeleteSame! I've read A LOT of thrillers, but I've never come across one with this premise. Sounds intriguing.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Greg!
Across the Desert looks good. I love MG fiction.
ReplyDeleteLauren
www.shootingstarsmag.net
Me, too! I read another one by her that was a survival story set in our Arizona desert. It was really compelling. I hope this one will be the same, but not TOO similar in plot.
DeleteThanks for popping in, Shooting Stars Mag!
Now I want to read The Last House on the Street as well. Genealogical mysteries are so much fun.
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for stopping by earlier!
I agree! I always love these kinds of mysteries.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Astilbe!
Your list has a great variety of books on it! I am also impressed that you only have 2 states left for the Literary Escapes challenge; I have a little over 10 left!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading a book set in Iowa right now, so the only two I still need are Delaware and North Dakota. They're tough states to check off.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
I love your covers. And, as I said last week, great that you did two of those lists. I'd never get through that many in a season but I rather read long books.
ReplyDeleteI guess you want to take some on your holidays, as well. Happy reading. And happy holiday!
Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.
I tend not to read really long books toward the end of the year since I'm always trying hard to make my goal :) Also, I'll be reading a lot of MG books in the next few months since I'm going to be a judge for the Cybils Award. I should definitely reach 200 books this year, which I've never done before!
DeleteI don't sleep well on planes, so I'll definitely be packing along some good reads to keep me entertained :)
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
Oh, well, that's a reason. I have participated in several challenges this year, sometimes the books are larger, sometimes shorter, so at the moment, I have a few long ones on my list.
DeleteMy goal is usually 100 but I only ever reached that once. But it's just such an obscure figure somewhere ... no harm done if I don't. I usually divide the number of pages I read by the average book and then I always get there. LOL
I hope you will enjoy all of these!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope so, too. Fingers crossed.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Evelyn!
Willodeen looks like a fun read. Hope you'll enjoy all of these!
ReplyDeleteWILLODEEN is a cute read. Not as good as I wanted it to be, but still a nice, uplifting, entertaining book.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lindsey!
Looks like you've got a good variety of books! Happy reading :)
ReplyDeleteI tried to mix things up a little and not just list all the mysteries and thrillers I want to read! LOL.
DeleteThanks for popping in, Louise!
I would like to check out the new Bowling book. I am a big Aven Green fan.
ReplyDeleteI've been loving Bowling's book lately, too. I liked her last survival-in-the-desert book, so I'm sure I'll enjoy ACROSS THE DESERT. I hope you do, too!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I didn't include it on my list, but I'm excited to read that new Diane Chamberlain book too. I've been slowly working my way through her backlist and just love everything she has written.
ReplyDeleteThese look fun; happy reading! I enjoyed Clark's The Black God's Drums, and I hope you do too!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! The Black God's Drums is one that intrigues me. Hope you enjoy them all, happy reading!
