Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Bookish Meme Turns the Big 1-O

With all the chaos going on in the world right now, it's probably not too surprising that I had a nightmare last night. What's funny is that with all of the anxieties, fears, and worries my dreaming brain could have focused on, it chose to entertain me with a bookish nightmare. I know it's because I had planned to retrieve my on-hold books from curbside pick-up this morning and I was worried about making it there within the library's pick-up hours (don't judge—quarantine has made me so lazy that 8 a.m. now seems like the crack of dawn). At any rate, I dreamt that I was doing my darndest to get to the library on time, but obstacles kept getting thrown in my path—an injured child that needed help, downed trees, deep mud, the Burger King breakfast my husband insisted on having, etc. By the time my dream self finally made it to the library, it was 1:00 in the afternoon! No matter how much I begged the librarians to just let me get my books, they refused. In the dream, I was frustrated and upset (naturally). When I woke up (in plenty of time to get to the library, thank you very much), I got a good chuckle out of my terrifying nightmare. Although this morning's library pick-up line was the longest one I've ever seen, I didn't mind waiting. It made me happy to think so many people (myself included) would soon be enjoying their new library books. I picked up the following (most of which I talked about here):
Now that I can sleep easy again, let's get to the actual point of this post—it's Top Ten Tuesday! It's a fun one because today marks TTT's 10th year of existence. I started participating in this weekly meme on February 26, 2013, with this post about auto-buy authors. Tuning in for TTT has been a joy for me over the years, so much so that I decided to use today's anniversary freebie topic to discuss the Top Ten Reasons I Love Top Ten Tuesday. Before we get to that, though, be sure to click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl and give Jana—our fabulous TTT host—lots of love. Happy Birthday, TTT!
Top Ten Reasons I Love Top Ten Tuesday (in no particular order):
1. It's a great way to discover new blogs to love.
2. It encourages me to drop in on blogs I might forget about or neglect otherwise.
3. It helps me find new books for the ole TBR mountain chain.
4. It's a fun way to compare and contrast my reading/bookish habits with those of other book bloggers.
5. Even if I don't love every TTT topic, they give me fresh ideas for posts.
6. It reminds me of how diverse the book blogosphere is, especially when it comes to genres read, writing style, etc.
7. I just can't get enough of bookish lists!
8. It's a fun way to get to know other book bloggers and to interact with each other in a positive, supportive way.
9. It gives me a warm, fuzzy sense of belonging. TTT people are my people!
10. TTT is a good ole time. I look forward to it every week.

Being denied your library books really is a nightmare. Glad you made there safe and sound. I spy Good Girl's Guide to Murder. I adored Pip, and I hope you do too. I agree with all your reasons for loving TTT, but at the heart of it, I just making lists, and I find it fun to try and find a common thread between the books on my read shelf.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad I got to the library in plenty of time. I don't know if the librarians keep serving customers after 10 or not, but there was a loooonnnnggg line. I'm glad I wasn't at the end of it!

I understand your bookish nightmare. I have been worried that our library will reclose since our county has had so many new cases of the virus.

Actually, I'm a little concerned about that as well. Ever since Arizona reopened, we've been getting tons of new COVID cases. I'm wondering if we're going to have to go back on lockdown to contain this second wave. I'm just praying a cure for COVID is found sound.

What a frustrating dream! I'm glad it didn't actually happen. It's so nice that your library allows you to retrieve on-hold books from curbside pick-up. Your list this week is a great way to celebrate TTT's 10th year. :)
ReplyDeleteI've slept too late for curbside pick-up before. The nice thing is they do it Monday through Friday, so if I miss one day I can just go the next! It's really not a big deal, but I tend to have these kinds of dreams when I'm worried about getting somewhere on time.

You reminded me that when I was a teacher, I always had unsettling dreams about not being able to get to school on time! I don’t miss those dreams!

Weirdly, I still have these types of dreams about college - I dream I'm late for class or I can't find my classroom or I'm taking a final for a class I forgot to attend all semester. College wasn't THAT stressful - I don't know why I still have nightmares about it 20+ years later!

Ah, I didn't think about looking to see when the first time I participated was, that's so cool that you did! I know what you mean about quarantine making it so hard to get up before 8 am. Aww, I love your idea for this TTT! And you really hit the nail on the head. I've met such fabulous bloggers through TTT that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise, and I'm so thankful for that! I do love how creative some of the topics are, too, even though TTT has definitely been to blame for my totally out-of-control TBR monster. xD When it inevitably takes over the world and enslaves humanity, you'll know what to blame.

LOL. TBR lists really can get crazy out of control, can't they? I recently deleted my 5000 book one on Goodreads and started over from scratch. It felt so liberating! My TBR list is still a bit of a monster, but it's a manageable one :)

I think I've only ever done this meme once or twice, but I do love reading other bloggers' posts. And I agree, I always get more books to add to my TBR list.

The one in your stack that jumped right out at me is "The Choice." I'm intrigued by that one an have it on hold here, but as an e-book. I think my library is doing curbside service but I haven't decided yet exactly how I feel about bringing physical books from there into the house.
ReplyDeleteHouston is not doing well at all in controlling the virus, and we are setting new daily highs just about every day now. I'm really ticked that so many of my "neighbors" ignore masking in favor of either laziness or some misplaced opinion that it's their "right" not to wear a mask.
THE CHOICE definitely sounds intriguing. I'm excited to see what it's all about. I'm glad you were able to find it on e-book, especially if you're nervous about curbside checkout. I'm okay with it, especially since the library seems to be taking all reasonable precautions - quarantining books between checkouts, wearing masks and gloves, etc.
DeleteI hear you, though. Arizona is also experiencing a big resurgence in COVID cases. Cities here are finally requiring masks, but not everyone is complying, of course. Sadly, it feels like we're going backward instead of forward. I won't be too surprised if we go back to lockdown/quarantine. We'll see.

What a great topic and I love all of your reasons. I love finding new favorite blogs and this has helped a lot. I also loved your nightmare although I'm sure it was rather scary for you at the time. It is nice to know that so many people are now enjoying so many new books. Hope you like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. I read it this month and LOVED IT!
ReplyDeleteMy county library (which I go to because it's bigger, brighter, and better organized than the city branch that's close to my house) is always hopping, especially in the summer. Usually, they have lots of great classes going as well as the summer reading program. None of that is happening in person right now, but at least people are still coming to the library to get books. Makes me happy :)

Ah, the good old "I need to do get somewhere/do something but I CAN'T" nightmare -- that's an exhausting one, my sympathies. Thankfully real life worked out better in this case! I have to admit, that's one instance in which a long line would make me happy too. Yay books! As cool as stacks of crisp new books look in photos, there is something I really like about seeing a stack of library-stickered ones too. Glad you shared.

What a great idea for the topic -- I'm happy that Jana left the official one more open-ended, but this would have been a good choice too. All of these are so great and I generally agree, although number 3 certainly has the capacity to be as bad a thing as it is good, haha.
Ha ha. I have this kind of dream every time I have to get up early to be somewhere and I'm worried I'm going to sleep through my alarm (even though I never actually have). I'm sure it's a common anxiety dream type.

ReplyDelete1- Absolutely, I have found lots of new book blogs this way.
2 - Sometimes, I do need a reminder.
3 - I do find people have vastly different taste then me and that's always okay.
4 - True for me too, I see a lot of book bloggers reading books I would never read.
5 - True for me too, I do find most of the topics a bit boring so I seem to think up a lot of alternative topics that I enjoy more.
6 - Lots of bloggers seems to be reading books that I'm sure I wouldn't know it existed if they haven't talked about it.
7 - I love bookish lists too.
8 - It is fun though sometimes I find it's hard to comment on someone's blog because of the format they choose to use for their comment system.
9 - I'm not sure I get the same feeling since most of TTT participants are book bloggers and I'm just a plain blogger who sometimes talk about books.
10 - Sometimes TTT does help me to come up with blog posts but mostly because I love talking about books.

Me, too. I've had nightmares about not getting to the airport on time, not getting my kids to school on time, being late for conferences, classes, church, etc. I'm not sure why it's such a fear of mine since, truthfully, I'm rarely late to things!

ReplyDeleteWow! That was nice of them to mail your books to you. The library I go to most often is a county branch, so it's a 20-minute drive for me. It would save me a lot of time and money if they just sent me my books!
