Top Ten Tuesday: It's Summertime and the Reading is Fine
1:00 AM
I'm not sure if this is clear, but when I talk about my TBR
First, though, I have to give a shout out to our lovely TTT host, Jana, over at That Artsy Reader Girl. Click on over to her blog for all the details on this fun weekly meme as well as book reviews, giveaways, and more.
Top Ten Books on My Summer 2020 TBR List, Part One (Adult Books)
1. Sisters by Daisy Johnson (available August 25, 2020)—Sisters July and September have always been inseparable. After a case of bullying at school, the girls' single mother moves them to her remote, abandoned ancestral home, where the sisters' bond will be tested in ways no one could have foreseen. Abandoned homes and sister relationships are two of my favorite literary tropes, so I'm definitely down for this one.
2. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett—This novel about Black twin sisters, one of whom is "passing" as White, unbeknownst to her White husband, sounds intriguing and timely. I'm in.
3. The Answer Is by Alex Trebek (available July 21, 2020)—I've always been a big Jeopardy! fan, so this autobiography of the game's host appeals to me. I don't know much about Trebek, so this will certainly be an interesting read.
4. Beach Read by Emily Henry—I've heard good things about this summery romance novel that centers on rival writers who are both dealing with severe writers' block. In order to shake up their writing games, they agree to swap genres and compete to see who can publish their book first. Sounds cute!
5. Home Before Dark by Riley Sager (available June 30, 2020)—I've enjoyed several of Sager's psychological thrillers and his newest sounds especially compelling. It's about Maggie, a woman who works as a restorer of old homes who inherits the haunted house her father popularized in a best-selling horror memoir. She doesn't believe in ghosts. But that's about to change ...
6. The Guest List by Lucy Foley—I've heard good things about this Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery. It involves a group of people celebrating a wedding on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Things start to go awry when someone turns up dead. I love me an atmospheric thriller set in an isolated locale, so this one is right up my alley.
7. The Lost Girls of Devon by Barbara O'Neal (available July 14, 2020)—Books about women returning home to confront secrets from their past always appeal to me, so I'm intrigued by this one that centers on a woman going back to her hometown after an old friend goes missing.
8. The Choice by Gillian McAllister—After visiting a bar where an annoying man wouldn't leave her alone, Joanna is walking home alone when she hears footsteps behind her. On instinct, she turns and pushes the man following her. He falls down a set of stairs and doesn't get up. What has Joanna done? The Choice explores the two paths the night could have taken in a novel that forces the reader to ask themselves, "What would I have done in Joanna's place?" Sounds compelling.
9. The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson—I've never heard a book described as "a comic novel that brings together a train wreck of a family, the Holocaust, and a brooch ..." (see review here) but that's a pretty irresistible description. I'm definitely going to read this one.
10. Sea Wife by Amity Gaige—At some time or another, all of us have probably been tempted to sell everything and hie off on a get-away-from-it-all adventure. That's what happens to Juliet when her husband decides to do just that. A year sailing around the world with their two young children doesn't sound so bad and it isn't. At first.
So, that's a portion of the books I'm interested in reading this summer. What do you think? Have you read any of them? Do you have suggestions for similar books I should pick up this summer? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I'll return the favor on yours.
Happy TTT!

Beach Read is on my list too.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspor.com
Yeah? I hope we both love it. I've heard good things about it.
DeleteThanks for coming by!
I have read Beach Read. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I loved it. Henry writes some great dialog, and she took me through just about every emotion as I read that book.
ReplyDeleteSounds like BEACH READ isn't quite what I've been expecting it to be either. Interesting. Makes me want to read it even more!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
Now I'm looking forward to The Answer is as well!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT .
Right? I've always thought of Trebek as a classy gentleman. I'd love to know more about him.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Lydia!
I have books hidden all around my house too! I also want to read most of these books on your list too!!
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I have bookshelves in almost every room of my house! They're *sort of* organized by genre, but not really :)
DeleteThanks for coming by, Donna!
Haven't read any of these YET, but I'm thrilled to see that Alex Trebek autobiography. I admire the man based on the little I know about him now, so I'll definitely be taking a long look at this one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for THE ANSWER IS as well. I really don't know much about Trebek, but he's always seemed like a very stand-up guy. It will be interesting to get more info on him and his career.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
That cover on Sisters totally freaks me out! :) Looks like you have some good reading ahead of you this summer.
ReplyDeleteRight? It's creepy. I can't say I like it, but it's definitely eye-catching.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
Beach Read is SO good! I skipped my BOTM pick but I ALMOST got Vanishing Half. Regretting that! Lol
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!
Ha ha. THE VANISHING HALF sounds like such an interesting read. And timely, too. I hope we both love it when we read it.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Leslie!
I’m really looking forward to reading Sisters and Home Before Dark too! Great list! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and hope you enjoy all of these! 💛
ReplyDeleteThey both look really good, don't they? I hope we both love them. Let me know what you think of them, too.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Christine!
I read Beach Read. It was good. Not the warm, fuzzy book it looks like. It's darker, but good.
ReplyDeleteReally? Interesting. Okay, now I REALLY need to read it. It sounds like it's different from what I expected, but still really good. Color me intrigued!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Deanna!
I'm curious to see what you think of Beach Read! It sounds fun, but I haven't decided yet it I want to read it.
ReplyDeleteWell, all I can say is that I'm even more intrigued by it now than I was! I've heard lots of good things about it, so I'm definitely going to try to get to it soon.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Nicole!
Great list! There are some lovely looking covers there and The Guest List is on my TBR too.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT is here https://bookloverssanctuary.com/2020/06/09/top-ten-tuesday-books-ive-added-to-my-tbr-and-forgotten-why-i-havent-read-them-yet/
Doesn't THE GUEST LIST look awesome? I might have to read it next just because I'm in the mood for this kind of story right now!
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
I read and loved The Imperfects! You can read my review here: http://mirisaspacestation.blogspot.com/2020/06/may-wrap-up.html
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say it's much about the Holocaust, and it's more about the power of stories and family history than a comedy, but highly recommend!
Awesome review! Now I'm even more excited to read it. When I saw the book described as a comedy about the Holocaust, I was seriously confused. Sounds like it's really more about family and genealogy, which happen to be two of my favorite subjects!
DeleteThanks for coming by!
I grabbed Beach Read for my Kindle after seeing a couple of reviews, sounds interesting. And I probably ought to look up The Lost Girls of Devon, seeing as I live in Devon. LOL
ReplyDeleteI can't tell for sure, but it looks like the author of DEVON is an American married to a Brit. It might be interesting (at least for you - I've never been to Devon, unfortunately) to see if she does it justice.
DeleteLet me know what you think of BEACH READ. It sounds awesome.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!
I read the Guest List and liked it and I have Vanishing Life on its way via Book of the Month. I have so many books on my TBR and I can't remember who recommended them or why I put them there in the first place.
ReplyDeleteRight? I've been trying to be better about taking note of who recommends certain books so I can be sure to go back and discuss the book with them. There's nothing better than handing the right book to the right person, so I want to make sure I thank the person who recommended a book I loved to me!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
I love posts like this since I get so many ideas for new books to get (as if I need more haha). Beach Read looks fun and I've been trying to try Riley Sager.
ReplyDeleteMe, too. Seasonal TBR lists are my favorite because I learn about so many books that I haven't even heard of. The last thing on earth I need is more books to read, but I always add them anyway :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Greg!
I love ancestral homes stories, so Sisters is going on my list now, too!
ReplyDeleteSame. It's one of my favorite tropes. I wish I had an old, crumbling, secrets-filled ancestral home out there somewhere!
DeleteThanks for coming by, CHeri!
All of these seem really interesting, with the exception of Home Before Dark by Riley Sager (I just can't do horror 😱). The cover of Sisters by Daisy Johnson is really creepy, but the description is intriguing. Great list!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT list!
I'm not huge on horror either, but I do like Sager. The cover of SISTERS is weird. I hope the book isn't too strange. We'll see.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Lectrice!
I guess this is just a twist on the TBR theme. ;)
ReplyDeleteI will have a twist on the list next week. LOL
Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.
Fun! I love twists on the weekly topic. If the prompt du jour doesn't speak to me, I change it up.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Marianne!
Same here. Although I often find something I can put in the TTT subject of the week. But there's nothing against a twist. On the contrary.
DeleteWow! These sound very good, esp 1,2,5, & 8. I look forward to reading your reviews. Thanks for visiting my blog earlier and leaving your link.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I tried to highlight more than just mystery/thrillers, but there are still a lot on there since it's my favorite genre :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Neeru!
Awesome list! Hope you love these when you get to them ♡
ReplyDeleteThanks! Me too :)
DeleteThanks for coming by, Mikky!
Looks like a solid list! Hope you enjoy 'em all! :D
ReplyDeleteI think these will be solid reads. We'll see.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Nikki!
I really enjoy Barbara O'Neal's books so Lost Girls of Devon is on my radar!
ReplyDeleteOh, good! I'd never heard of her before, so I'm excited to try her out.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marg!
Beach read has been on my TBR list for a while as well. Mostly because I keep seeing other people mentioning it in reviews and on instagram. Great list!
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing it mentioned everywhere as well. Normally, I'm not a huge one for hype, but it really does sound like a good book.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, JJ!
Such a great list! I've never heard of The Imperfects before but it sounds so interesting. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteRight? I'm really excited to read it as well. I'm on the waiting list for it at the library, so we'll see how long it takes to get the book ...
DeleteThanks for coming by, Holly!
Ooh, I had no idea Trebek had a memoir coming out. That looks fantastic. The heavily-promoted Guest List worked its magic on me and is on my TBR as well -- in an unprecedented effort, I even put myself on the library request list, though admittedly I am...40th? on 4 copies.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the Trebek memoir either until I Googled new releases in books. I'm excited to read more about him.
DeleteYeah, I'm on the library list for THE GUEST LIST as well. I'm 59th out of 60 :( I'm not sure how many copies my library has, but the waiting lists actually move pretty quickly. We'll see.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, RS!
I've heard great things about Sea Wife! Happy summer reading!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a really good list. I need to read the Alex Trebek book for many reasons, he is Canadian, I love Jeopardy and my husband passed from pancreatic cancer. I have a couple of these on my summer list as well. Enjoy them all Susan.
ReplyDeleteOh, I want to read that Alex Trebek book.
