Top Ten Tuesday: Curbside Checkout, Here I Come!
2:40 PM
It's Tuesday again. I think. I don't know about you, but these days, my Tuesdays don't look much different from my Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays! Nothing much has changed here except I've read a few more books, cross-stitched for a few (okay, a lot more than a few) more hours, and watched more episodes of The Middle. I did have a Zoom meeting for my church "job" this morning, so that added some excitement to my day. Other than that, it's the same ole, same ole around here. I'm not complaining—we're all healthy and staying (more or less) sane at my house. An extended member of our family died last week of COVID-19 after several weeks in the hospital, so that was a sobering reminder of why we're all sheltering in place. Please keep yourself and your loved ones safe and healthy!
On a lighter note, it's time for Top Ten Tuesday. If you're not familiar with this fun meme, you really should be. Head on over to That Artsy Reader Girl for all the info. Today's topic is Top Ten Book Titles That Would Make Great Band Names. I love music as much as the next person, but I'm just not feeling this one today. Instead, I'm going to give you a glimpse into my obsession with organizing my main Goodreads TBR list. Because I reached the limit of how many books you can have in a bookshelf (5000, if you're curious), I had to make separate lists for non-fiction and children's books. EDIT: I'm so sorry if I freaked anyone out with my unintentional lie about Goodreads bookshelf limits! What I meant to say was that if you go over 5000 on a single bookshelf, Goodreads will no longer let you put those books in want-to-read order (at least I can't figure out how). Since ordering my books is my favorite part of GR list-making, I keep my lists under 5000. Does that make more sense? So, today I'm focusing on the books on my adult fiction "bookshelf," listing the entries in want-to-read order. I'm going to briefly mention the titles I've talked about recently or repeatedly and spend more time on those I haven't highlighted yet.
Here we go with Top Ten Books on My Goodreads Adult Fiction TBR List:
1. The Sea of Lost Girls by Carol Goodman—I already talked about this book here. I've also lamented the fact that a copy of it is being held hostage at my county library, gathering dust on the "Holds" shelf. Well, good news! I just learned that the library will start curbside checkout tomorrow. I'm stoked. I've been wanting to read this book ever since I heard about it, so yay! I will liberate my on-hold book as soon as I can tomorrow morning.
2. The Girl From Widow Hills by Megan Miranda (available June 20, 2020)—I enjoy Miranda's thrillers and this one sounds as intriguing as her others. It involves a woman who achieved celebrity status as a child when she miraculously survived a near-drowning. As the 20th anniversary of the event approaches, the girl—now a woman living under a different name—starts experiencing strange symptoms that link her disturbing past to her threatened present. Can't wait!
3. All the Ways We Said Goodbye by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White—I highlighted this title here.
4. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle—talked about it here
5. The Cutting Place by Jane Casey—Maeve Kerrigan is one of my favorite fictional police detectives. In Casey's newest, the 9th installment in the series, Maeve is sent to investigate the death of a young female journalist who was killed while working on a story about an elite gentleman's club. I'm in for anything Maeve!
6. The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate—I've talked about this one before. I'm in the middle of the novel right now and I'm really enjoying it.
7. The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan—I'm not sure what's going on with the U.S. publication of this book. It came out in Australia in February but is not available for a reasonable price anywhere else as far as I can tell (there is a $40.87 copy listed on Amazon and a $30.36 one on BookDepository). Presumably, the hang-ups are because of COVID-19. Hopefully, The Good Turn will be more widely available soon.
This is the third installment in the DI Cormac Reilly series, which I enjoy. The story begins with the suspected kidnapping of a young girl. Short-staffed and hindered by red tape, Cormac and his partner make a horrible mistake in the case, which leaves the former suspended and the latter banished to a small town where he discovers some odd findings in a murder case that has supposedly been solved ...
8. Please See Us by Caitlin Mullen—An Atlantic City boardwalk psychic starts having strange visions that she thinks are related to two recent murders. When she launches her own investigation into the killings, she puts herself right in a killer's path ...
9. Reviving the Hawthorn Sisters by Emily Carpenter (available October 20, 2020)—I enjoy Carpenter's immersive thrillers and her newest sounds just as intriguing as her other books. This one revolves around Eve Candler, a woman who has kept her grandmother's secrets for years. No one else knows that the revered evangelist and faith healer was a complete fraud and a con artist to boot. When an even bigger secret about her grandmother surfaces, Eve risks everything to find out the truth.
10. Before Familiar Woods by Ian Pisarcik—I love the big lies in small towns trope, so naturally, I find the premise of this book appealing. It has to do with the murders of two boys and the subsequent disappearances of their fathers. It's left to one mother to figure out what is happening in her not-so-quaint little town.
There you go, the top ten books on my adult fiction Goodreads TBR shelf. Have you read any of them? What are the most tantalizing titles on your TBR list? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I'll return the favor on yours.
Happy TTT!

Oooh there are some interesting titles on here I've never heard of before! All The Ways We Said Goodbye looks like my kind of book!
ReplyDeleteAlso, sidenote: I'm seriously impressed you reached the limit on your goodreads TBR shelf, that's really impressive!
Ha ha. I add any book that looks interesting just so I don't forget it. I should probably be more selective about what I add :)
DeleteThanks for coming by, Evelyn!
So sorry to hear about your family member. ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteIf I'm being honest, blogging helps me keep track of the days, because I have a pretty set schedule of the types of posts I put up each day.
Wow! 5000 books is a lot. I also have In Five Years on my TBR. I find the concept interesting. I mean, it's not wholly original, but the way it's explained in the synopsis sounds like something I would enjoy.
He wasn't a close family member, but I knew him. He's the first person I've actually known who has died from the virus. So sad.
DeleteYou're more organized about your blogging than I am. TTT is about the only regular thing that happens on my blog! LOL.
Thanks, as always, for stopping by and commenting, Sam!
That's a neat list! But... there's a GR shelf limit? Oh noes! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I totally lied. Sorry! I didn't do it on purpose. 5000 is actually NOT the limit for GR bookshelves, BUT if you go over 5000 in a list, GR will no longer let you put them into want-to-read order. Since ordering the books I want to read is my favorite thing about GR shelves, I keep them under 5000. I'm going to edit my post with this information so I don't cause a readers' riot!
DeleteThanks for coming by, Nicole!
Oh cripes! There's really a limit of 5000 books a shelf?? Was that on a shelf you'd created or the built-in "want to read" exclusive shelf? I just checked on one of my super-prolific friends, and she's got over 6k on the automatic read/want to read shelves, so I'm wondering if that makes a difference or some strange new happenings are afoot.
ReplyDeleteMoving on, huzzah for curbside checkout!! Lots of interesting titles, per usual. I'm in the middle of reading a Val McDermid series right now and wondering what I'm going to do next -- I love the style but don't want to take her up on another series due to the gore level, so maybe Jane Casey would be a good next move. I love the name Maeve already.
Or the latest Dervla McTiernan! (whenever it's available) I read the other Cormac Reilly books last fall and I really enjoyed them (though oh boy, remembering the other detectives at this point is going to be a trick). I'm glad I was already planning to make this a fall read, because an unexpected delay when you're anticipating a book is terrible.
P.S. The Middle is a darling show. Excellent choice.
Sorry to lead you astray! I just explained the shelf thing above. I'll edit my post so it's accurate :)
DeleteI haven't read anything by McDermid, but I am trying to stay away from anything TOO graphic and gory. Casey doesn't usually go too far overboard for me. I've enjoyed all her books.
I always have trouble remembering who's who and what's what in a series unless I read the books one right after the other. Of course, I'm usually WAAAAYYY too impatient for that!
My whole family loves The Middle. We all relate to it in various ways.
Thanks for stopping by!
Ohhh, yeah, that makes a lot more sense, thanks for clarifying (maybe I rely a little TOO much on Goodreads...).
DeleteGood to hear about Jane Casey. I try to stay away from anything too gruesome as well -- clearly I did not research the McDermid books; o my folly!
Ha ha. I love Goodreads!
DeleteBTW: I can't get on to your blog. It won't come up for me for some reason. I'll try again tomorrow.
As always, a great list. I recently got The Scholar, book 2 by McTiernan, and am looking forward to it. I am so sorry to hear about your family member; sending hugs your way!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Like I said in another comment, he wasn't a close family member, but he was still someone I knew, which was ... sobering.
DeleteMcTiernan is great. I love her books.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
I am so sorry for your family's loss, you're so right about remembering why this is all so important. Big hugs.
ReplyDeleteIn Five Years does sound really good, every time I see it I remember I want it hah. Also, I need to get to more Megan Miranda books! I loved all the ones I have read, so why haven't I read more?! I hope you get to these sooN! Also, I had NO idea that Goodreads had limits! What happens if you read more than 5,000 books!!?
Yeah, before our family member died, the pandemic was awful, but not that personal, if that makes sense. His death made it much more personal.
DeleteMiranda's great. Her books always hook me and keep me cruising through the pages!
So, I actually lied about the 5000 limit. It's just that if you go over 5000, you can no longer put your books in order. At least I can't figure out how.
Happy TTT!

I loved the teacher storyline in Book of Lost Friends!
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry for your loss.....We just heard that a family friend died yesterday of Covid....it’s sobering!
I'm enjoying THE BOOK OF LOST FRIENDS a lot. It's sad, but engrossing.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your loss. We have had two extended family members get the virus, both men about the same age - one of them recovered and is now perfectly fine, the other died. Random and weird and just super sad.
Thanks for coming by!
I love your list! I just added The Book of Lost Friends to my TBR. It sounds great!
ReplyDeleteIt's a really good one. I'm enjoying it immensely!
DeleteThanks for coming by!
My condolences to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note, I know you should never judge a book by it's cover but some of those covers really are fab. I think The Sea of Lost Girls just pips Please See Us as my favourite cover.
Mystery/thriller covers are always so broody and mysterious, aren't they?
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Louise!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope that the curve will begin to flatten soon.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of the books you mentioned but there are several that caught my interest.
I hope so, too. The abundance of caution being displayed seems ridiculous until you remember that people are still dying from this virus. So scary and sad!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Melissa!
I have about half of these on my TBR pile!
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike :) Let me know what you think of them when you read them. We need to compare notes!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marg!
Oh hello all you lovely new thrillers and mysteries to me! Awesome list, Susan -- more than a couple of titles I didn't know about.
ReplyDeleteMystery/thrillers are my kryptonite! Even when I tell myself to find something gentler to read, I still find them irresistible.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Verushka!
Great list, Susan. And a great idea with the change of the topic. If you don't feel like it, you don't feel like it. This should be fun. I loved it but sometimes are not so keen on others.
ReplyDeleteSo, nice that you did another subject. Mind you, some of those titles would have been great for a band name, as well, 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 for example. LOL
Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.
Yeah, some topics immediately bring 20 books to mind; others, not even one! You're right, though, some of the titles I did highlight would make good band names. I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it :)
DeleteThanks for coming by!
Wowow!! So much info about goodreads that I didn't know before! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I may or may not spend WAAAYYY too much time at Goodreads :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Holly!
I've been cleaning up my TBR list a bit with the intention of reducing it by eliminating some of the books that have been on it the longest - assuming that means they will never get read. I was hoping to make the list more manageable, but ended up adding almost as many as I eliminated.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, this week I added a couple if see on this list, "The Book of Lost Friends" and "In Five Years." An lo and behold, I see a couple more on this list that I need to add. This whole clean-up the TBR thing is not working... :-)
Ha ha. I don't even bother trying to cull my lists! Other than the top 20-30 books, I don't even organize them in want-to-read order. I just like having all my TBR titles in one place so I can easily find the books that sound interesting to me.
DeleteTHE BOOK OF LOST FRIENDS really is a good one. It's interesting, clean, and moving. Also sad, but I'm assuming it's going to have a hopeful ending. It better or I'm going to be mad!
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I wish we had curbside checkout!
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice! Today was the first day it has been offered, but it went pretty smoothly all told. I'm really excited about it if you can't tell :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
I have a few of these books on my want to read list. :) And I love that you like to order your lists of books, too.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think of them when/if you get to them. It's always fun to compare notes :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
That's awesome your library is going to be doing that! I'm sure the librarians and community are happy about it, too.
ReplyDeleteThe Sea of Lost Girls looks really interesting, thanks for putting it on my radar!
There was a pretty long line at the library this morning, so I guess I'm not the only one who was excited about curbside checkout :) I think it's fabulous. The poor librarians have to work out in the heat (it's supposed to be in the mid-80s here in Arizona this week, and triple digits next week - ick), but at least they're able to work still. I definitely appreciate them being out there.
DeleteI'm excited for THE SEA OF LOST GIRLS, too, especially now that I FINALLY have it in my hot little hands :)
Thanks for stopping by, Jocelyn!
These all sound like really great reads! I hope you enjoy them all when you get to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope so, too. It's such a disappointment when a book that sounds really, really good turns out to be a dud. Hopefully, that won't happen with any of these.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Deanna!
The idea that some people have over 5,000 books on their Goodreads shelves makes me feel not so bad about my TBR shelf on there lol. I haven't heard of a lot of these before, so I have some books to look into! The Sea of Lost Girls, especially, sounds good. Hope you enjoy these!
ReplyDeleteHa ha. You're welcome! Any time I come across a book that sounds intriguing, I throw it on one of my GR TBR lists. It helps keep the book on my radar (at least as much as possible with a 5000+ title list).
DeleteThanks for coming by, Sammie!
I'm so sorry about your family memnber.
ReplyDeleteI found a few Barnes and Noble's in my area during curbside pickup. I plan on taking advantage of that. :) I've also been ordering from different indie bookstores around the country every so often.
The Book of Lost Friends is one I plan to get to.
Thank you for your condolences. I wasn't close to the family member, but I did know him. His death is surreal and it's been tough watching his close family members deal with his passing. So sad :(
DeleteI've been trying really, REALLY hard not to buy any books from anywhere because I have thousands of unread books sitting around my house that need attention. I've been tempted, though! My local B&N is doing curbside pickup. My favorite indie is still operating online and with curbside pickup as well, but it's a 40-minute round trip drive, so I haven't been willing to make the trek. I'm just hoping they can open back up soon. I miss browsing there.
Thanks for stopping by, Leah!
So sorry about your family member, Susan. Will keep all of you in my prayers. We found out that one of the five people who have died in our county was a lady we used to go to church with. Her daughters were so devastated. She was a nice lady.
ReplyDeleteSome good books here. Glad your library will be letting you have your hold! Some of the libraries in our area are doing this and some, like Austin, are still completely buttoned up.
I was thrilled to be able to get my hold. Yay! I'm almost done with it, too :) Next week, the library will be allowing us to put books on reserve and pick them up curbside. I'm excited!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I don't put too many books that I don't have on Goodreads. Most of my books there are books that I already own (and I own a lot). I hope you enjoy these you get the chance to read them!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of features on Goodreads that I don't use. I probably should use it to keep track of books I own since I can never remember which books I have and which I don't! I've bought the same book twice on multiple occasions. LOL.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Carole!
I'm so sorry for your loss and you're right about that being a reminder. On a lighter note, I didn't realize Goodreads had a limit and I am painfully close to it so thanks for the heads up! This is a great list and I see so many that are on my TBR as well - especially All the Ways We Say Goodbye and the Jane Casey.
ReplyDeleteI use GR mainly to organize the books I really want to read in the order I want to read them, so I have to keep my lists under 5000. If you don't care about having them in a certain order, you can add as many as you want to your bookshelf. At least I think so. I don't know if there's a limit to how many books you can have on any one shelf.
DeleteI'm excited for the Jane Casey book and ALL THE WAYS We SAY GOODBYE. I got the former from NetGalley and the latter from the publisher. Now, I just need to read them.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
I’m really looking forward to reading The Girl From Widow Hills too! So many great sounding books on your list! 😊
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm super excited for all of these. I have copies of most of them - I just need to actually read them :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
Great list! I'm so intrigued by In Five Years.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds really good, doesn't it? I have it out from my e-library right now, but I don't think I'm going to actually get to it before it comes due. Boo hoo.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Jess!
