Distracted By Books

I've talked before about what a little bookworm my 7-year-old daughter is. She reads constantly, running through dozens of books each month. She stashes books in the car, the bathrooms, the kitchen - everywhere - just so she will never be without one. Sound familiar?

Anyway, her assignment for today is to get her room cleaned. It's a disaster, and will probably take her hours to get straightened. So, I was surprised when she popped down the stairs a couple of minutes ago. I asked her if her room was clean, to which she heaved a big sigh and said, "I'm TRYING to clean my room, but I keep getting distracted by books!" A few minutes later, her eyes lit up as she hit on the perfect solution: "I'm going to take all of the books out of my room until it's clean. Then, I'll put them back." And off she trotted.

I'm still chuckling. How many times do we bookworms get so distracted by our reading that housework goes undone, kids get ignored, and work falls by the wayside? I think my daughter knows what she's talking about: If we carted all the books out of our houses, we'd have so much time for other things. But, where's the fun in that? Who wants to scrub toilets when adventure awaits inside a book? I'm tempted to let her lounge on her unmade bed and read all day, but that's how she got herself into this (literal) mess in the first place. What's the bookworm mom of a bookworm child to do? I'm sure there's a book on the subject out there somewhere ...

  1. Last night we were waiting for a table at Applebees, and Avery was stuck in Island of the Blue Dolphins, Tom got distracted by the bball on the tv (while holding Lucy & Callie), so I pulled my book out of my bag. We probably looked pretty funny to the other people waiting for tables.

(p.s. that's a great photo, with the light spotlighting her and stuff).

  2. I just had to write and comment what a gorgeous picture that is. And one to treasure as she gets older and hopefully stays a bookworm! :-) My five year old has the beginnings of being a bookworm, I only hope she blossoms into a full-fledged one when she can read on her own.

And yes, reading a book is much more exciting than housework and all the mindless other tasks we encounter throughout the day.

Thank you for the fun post.

  3. Oh yes, I am always distracted by books. I remember when I was younger, I used to read with a flashlight under the covers, and I'd get in so much trouble if I got caught. But to me, the risk was definitely less than the reward!

  4. Wonderful picture, Susan. I love how your daughter is framed by two different blankets and then spotlighted by the sunlight streaming in the window.

I don't think there's much that pleases a bookworm mom more than having a bookworm child.

  5. I knew everyone would relate to a child besotted by books! Update: She managed to get her room cleaned, since Daddy offered Dairy Queen as a reward.

Speaking of Daddy, I should mention that my husband took that picture. He's a great amateur photographer.

Also, it's usually a hoot to watch my daughter read because she's so animated. She'll clap her hand over her mouth, laugh out loud and exclaim, "Mom! You HAVE to read this!" The picture was taken while she was sick, so she looks a little drugged. Anyway, I'm glad y'all enjoyed it.

  7. Beautiful photo and post. I, too, have a 7-year old bookworm (and I'm more than guilty about forgetting the housework while engrossed in a good book).

  8. Great post! My daughter, who is in first grade, has just now begun to pick up books on her own to read. As a reader myself, it's such a thrill!

  10. Haha. My parents always had to tell us to put down our books if they wanted to talk to us!

  11. I am constantly telling Harmony that she doesn't need a book to...brush her hair, eat her breakfast, clean her room, go to bed etc.

It must be hereditary! Ethan is totally starting to get into books too!

  12. I still clap my hand over my mouth, say OMG!, and tell Hubby that he has to read what I just read. As everyone has stated before me, I LOVE that picture! I have been a book worm since I was a little girl and remember leaning over the bed to catch the light from the hall way so I could read Sweet Valley High and Sunfire Romance Books amoung many many others when I was growing up.
Thanks for sharing your darling story about your little bookworm.
